Ok we all understand we are going to eventually need a ELD but what is considered an AOBRD. What info is needed to comply with that. The rule says,

A “grandfathered” AOBRD is a device that a motor carrier installed and required its drivers to use before the electronic logging device (ELD) rule compliance date of December 18, 2017. The device must meet the requirements of 49 CFR 395.15. A motor carrier may continue to use grandfathered AOBRDs no later than December 16, 2019. After that, the motor carrier and its drivers must use ELDs. See Section 395.15 (a) of the ELD final rule.

So if implemented now (8/28/2017) we wouldnt have to have an ELD until 2019 right? The FMCSA words everything like we all went to law school so i just want to make sure i got it right. Hopefully they either kick the ELD law or change the HOS rules by then. Thanks in advance!

If you buy and start using an AOBRD by the deadline you can use it until 2019. At which time you will need to upgrade to an ELD.

We dont want the ELD to begin with so dont think well be biting the bullet until 2019. Thank you to everyone hopefully those websites can provide a bit more clarity. Im hoping our GPS will sufice as a ABORD until 2019. We have both a Garmin and a Rand McNally.

It has to plug into the diagnostic port on your truck to be compliant.

Ahh we were wondering how that would work. Anybody know of a cheap compliant ABORD device?

Big road has one, no hardware cost and is $19.50 per month. I think that's the one I'm going to go with. It is app based.

    CDL CPL Thanks this.
