First of all most drivers have been on E-logs for years.
Second of all you CAN move with expired hours. Whether there might be a penalty to pay for it is a different story. There never has been for me. First company I worked for ignored any such instances (probably one a month, from a few minutes to a half hour or more) and my present company actually encourages us to keep running rather than shut down if we are within say an hour of a terminal or a customer. I've rarely had to do so but have never worried about it or taken the slightest extra risk to 'beat the clock'.
Thirdly in 5 plus years of driving I have had the authorities look at my logs precisely once, just a few months ago, and it was a very brief look. More like a glance. I expect the next such instance will be in 2023 or so.
ELDs are going to get people hurt/killed

I do over 3600 miles in 5 and a half days (six shifts)
on e-logs,
every week,
and finish every work week with about 6 hours left over on my 70. -

Just like most statistics you can use it to support any predefined conclusion you want them to. In this case those who claim elogs are dangerous see it as evidence of their claim and disregard all other evidence to the contrary such as tickets and warnings for hos violations steadily decreasing over the last decade. Or accidents per mile driven have actually been falling, not raising. So basics yes total accidents are going up, but in relation to total trucks and mileage accident rates are going down. -
I read that the accident rate, crashes per 100,000 miles, has went up every year since 2010, after having been on a steady decline for years before that. Why? Who knows.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
I have seen in the Minneapolis area an increase in migrant\minority drivers who you would automatically assume had limited English vocabulary. Drive like they just got their learners permits.
Not saying this is why, but putting it out there as a possibility.shatteredsquare and thaistick Thank this. -

Elogs have been Increasingly used for years up until the hammer of the mandate hit.
It hasn't made anything safer whatsoever, it was a BS law based on handicapping competition by the ATA and their scum mega fleet sweatshops.
The HOS put in a box is a deskjockey dream at safety. It's just horse***t on a sandwich.
It wouldn't be that hard to allow flexible hos but the FMCSA just loves their power Trip as always.
The guidance isn't law, quit the BS and write the guidance into the FMCSRs.
Enough roadside interpretation by barney fife and the mood he's in that day.Last edited: Feb 4, 2019
