But then again, the state will go over the driver's logs with a fine toothed comb. If he wasn't supposed to be there his family will get nada.

Struck in the head by a large piece of metal, and still managed to not only get the rig through the tunnel but even parked it off the road safely.
Now, that's what I call a trucker. RIP.Steel Dragon, 4mer trucker, rabbiporkchop and 5 others Thank this. -
Given the fact that the former governor of PA, Ed Rendell got legislation passed to force the PA Tpk to increase their tolls X% a year for 52 years starting in 2008, and turn over part of that money for non turnpike( general tax fund) reasons, not turnpike maintenance, add the usual well known corruption to the organizations, and well there is a trail here.
They had to close the main bridge between NJ and PA Tpk's last year for 4 months because of undetected structural problems.Steel Dragon, Oldironfan, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Steel Dragon, Lepton1 and bzinger Thank this.

And this tunnel's electric grid needs to be removed from the ceilings asap. You would think water, cold free and burn cycle combined with heat from truck exhausts etc and rust on the bolts kill them things up there and they fall down.
There are several things not adding up. Family should sue properly.
Most people don't understand that the TPike system is bordering on 80 years old if not more. Many bridges and overpasses have already been replaced once systemwide so far in my life time.Lepton1, Oldironfan and Puppage Thank this. -
This side of the tunnel had lights mounted overhead. The other side has them mounted on the wall. The turnpike authority says the ights will be moved from the ceiling to the wall.lovesthedrive, x1Heavy and Lepton1 Thank this. -
They said "The tunnels are safe otherwise they would not be open". So, carry on. Disregard what you may take from this incident.
Tiles are always falling inside the PA Turnpike tunnels across I-76. But for them to do the repairs with today's traffic volumes? And having to funnel both directions down to one lane? For how long will it take to refurbish each side of all the tunnels? Going to be a traffic nightmare for a good long while. -
Puppage and lovesthedrive Thank this.

It was a freak accident, if we give this family 200 million for their loss then we should expect to pay 4,000 dollars in tolls to drive across there each time.

This is very upsetting. The only tunnel with over head wiring. I feel bad for the loss of the fellow driver. Who was on the verge of taking it easy. And the pain the family is going through.
Honestly this makes my blood boil. There ought to be a public hanging for the individuals responsible for this tunnel, and the death of that driver.lovesthedrive Thanks this.
