I'm dealing with small static discharges through my laptop while using it.

I'm using a surge protector plugged into an outlet in the bunk. How do I ground it and shouldn't it already be grounded?

    thanks

Try another ground wire from the cab to the frame. Older trucks it's a common problem, electrical gremlins, and I'd start with a good ground.

What size wire would you recommend? Larger the better?

Well, no need for a battery cable, but a good stout wire. Speaking of batteries, when a battery of 3 or 4 fails, it does weird things too.

your problem is only in the inverter. that inverter is just a normal one. sine wave inverter doesnt let the power surge or pulse.

Yes, some laptops do not get along with a Modified Sine Wave inverter.

16 gauge wire will carry 20 amps. 16 gauge is very common in the wiring. The desk your using the laptop on is plastic, so no grounding there. Rubbing long sleeve shirts on the plastic will generate static.

Otherwise cook more coffee. A higher humidity will lessen the ability to create a static electricity discharge.

You should not have any discharge at the laptop, that's why I asked my question. You are using two different isolation power supplies with a common ground that is created through the system.

Grounding it doesn't address the issue.

    thanks for all the replies

    2019 cascadia btw

ya, the source of power to the bunk is via the inverter

no visible spark when I handle my chromebook but a decent static shock.

i too suspected low humidity in the truck may be the cause but how do i remedy it

i'm afraid i going to fry my chromebook...it froze the other night after displaying weird pixals
(never did that before). I had to reboot.

    lovesthedrive Thanks this.
