I really doubt that . Every carrier specs how their system works . I know they will switch from driving to on duty when a vehicle stops moving but I have never heard of one switching to off duty .

There is no need to print or fax logs . Carriers get the logs transmitted from the EOBR and they are updated every hour or so . Carriers may get instant notification of speeding , hard braking , and running when hours go out . EOBR's also give location and odometer readings .
As far as equipment costs goes XRS charges nothing for equipment or installation costs .
Nobody is forced to lease on with Landstar or any other carrier forcing an O/O to buy the EOBR . -
The only information that the feds require an owner operator to supply his carrier is his logs. The carrier has no legal reason to have other information from the owner operator other than his mileage and gallons for IFTA. If the owner operator has his own IFTA account, then the carrier doesn't need that information. The carrier does not need the location of the owner operator in real time. They don't need to know if the owner operator had to brake hard to avoid hitting someone who cut in front of him. These may be things that the carrier would like to have, they are not legally entitled to gather that information. I have no doubt that those carriers who lease on owner operators and require they purchase "their" EOBR would like to have the other information, but it is not legally required. If the EOBR's do become mandatory, at they are not at this point, then those who must pay for them should be able to buy the one of their choice. They may choose to purchase the least expensive in order to comply with the law rather than spending more to provide additional information to the carrier that they may not need.

Please show the law that says the owner is only required to show logs.
Because if a company switches to electronic logs, it can require you to comply as part of the lease agreement. Don't want to comply, then goodbye.
I am in the same boat. My company has mentioned it as well. -
The fmcsa lists the requirements which must be included in a lease agreement. You can do a search on their website. I don't recall any provision within the law which requires that the owner operator provide anything to the carrier electronically. Logs must be provided within a certain time frame and kept by the carrier for a minimum time, as I recall. The owner operator will need to provide miles and gallons by state in order to comply with IFTA, but that can be provided manually rather than electronically. Maintenance records must also be collected and maintained by the carrier, but that is also not required to be transmitted electronically.
If I were leased to a carrier and they wanted me to install an EOBR and pay a monthly fee, at my expense, then I would find another carrier or get my own authority. Since I run my own authority, that is not a problem. I am surprised that more owner operators have not left those carriers who insist that the owner operators purchase an EOBR before the law has even been implemented. If there is a law on the books that states that every class 8 truck have an EOBR, will either need to comply or get out of the business. Until that happens, I think that these carriers are jumping the gun and pushing their own agenda. Remember, it is the ATA and some of their largest members who pushed for the EOBR's in the first place. If enough owner operators stood up for themselves and canceled their leases with these carriers, you might see a change. Some carriers are switching to EOBR's due to having too many log book violations. It does impact their CSA scores and could also effect insurance rates and freight opportunities. There are still many carriers who don't require ELOGS. -
If I remember right, lease agreements also have wording in them about fmcsa and compliance.
If it becomes mandatory, then what choice is there? -

Personally, I have kept my paramedic license active.
I have kept my Enrolled Agent to Practice before the IRS active and still prepare some returns.
I just do this because I enjoy the life away from the stress in the others I have done.landstar8891 Thanks this. -
I did alot wrong in my life and screwed up much of the time..One thing i did do right was a ran hard and saved alot of money.I new the ''old'' days of running paper logs and running hard for the big money was near the end.
Five years ago i put a ''plan'' together..And i think i pulled it off..My beautiful home is paid for and my Harly's..I ripped up every credit card and kept one that was only a 5% Int rate..I sold my flashy cars and paid cash for a F-150 Pick Up Truck..I paid off every bill i had and started socking money away...
If the day comes when i am not making the ''dynamite'' money in trucking i am used to,then i will be done.I will let the dumbed down Drivers of today run FOR CHEAP...
After that i will drive ''local'' by the hour to just make my taxes, electric, water, sewer, heat and food...Then i will enjoy life at the Home Front...Lone Ranger 13 Thanks this.
