the 14 hour clock only counts towards todays time. Once it's gone, it's gone till you do a 10 hour reset. Also, once you start it, you cannot stop it unless you go to sleeper berth for a split time. And that's more complicated to describe.
The 11 hour driving clock and any additional time on Line 4 (on-duty) all count towards the 60 or 70 hour clocks.
Embarrased to ask a HOS question at this stage, but....

Ok let me clarify.
Is it legal if I drive 7 hours, lump freight 3 hours on line four, then drive another 4 hours? Meaning I have been "On Duty" for 14 hours. No "off duty" or "sleeper berth" logged at any time during that 14.
I was under the impression the only way to extend my eleven hour window is line 1. (aside from irregularities like split sleeper, 16 hour rule and other oddities.)

yes, you can do that. You'd be pushing your limit on the 14 hour window though.
As one other suggested. I also make a mark where I start and then 14 hours later. I HAVE to be completed with my line 3 driving time in that window.Pmracing Thanks this. -
if you drove 7 hours lumped frieght 4 hours than you would only have 3 hours driving time left =10 hrs on duty driving and 4 hours on duty not driving cant drive after the 14 hr window from start time has ended
there is/was a way to extend your 14 hour period though so you could have drove for that last hour of legal driving timePmracing Thanks this. -

Just remember: Once you start your 14 hour clock there is no stopping it. I've seen driver think that if they go to line one while on there meal break that it doesn't count towards the 14. They are in for a rude awakening.

OP, in your example you are OK....basically it's 11 hours of driving within a 14 hour window....what you do with the other 3 hours is on you. You cannot drive after the 14th hour of beginning your day or the 11th hour of driving. You can however work through eternity on line 4 as long as you take a 10 hour break on lines 1 or 2 or a combination of both before driving again. Not using the split sleeper rule to avoid more confusion.Last edited: May 16, 2013

Also, there is no such thing as an 11 hour window. As others have stated it's a 14 hour window with 11 hours max drive time. Now another thing to watch out for is working 14 hours a day will eat up your 70 hour clock quickly.

But the 14 hour window for driving has no effect on the 70 hour clock.....Pmracing Thanks this. -
This changes on July 1st. You will have to include a 30 minute break on or between the 3rd and 8th hour. You can work as much as you want to. Before driving, if you haven't used your entire 70 hours, you must have a 10 hour break. Then, you can drive up to 11 hours or whatever was left on your 70. If you have reached your 70 or are over, you can wait until you recap a day or take a 34 hour restart. In some of the examples, you do not include at least a 15 minute Post Trip Inspection. Your driving time would be cut short this 15 minutes.
