Great information.
Much cheaper than I expected.
I also tend to estimate high on all expenses, that way I'm happy when it is chapter than planned, not shocked by the cost.
I recently had my old/tired F350 plow truck at a shop, for many new and expensive parts, and a bunch of labor. Being who I am, my guesstimate was worse case scenario. When it was thousands less, I was elated.
But my nature is to overestimate the cost of tires, parts, fuel, labor, even the time to make a haul.
So when I got my F350 back last weekend, and the bill was only a bit over $3,800 what a pleasant surprise. I told myself to expect a bill of around $6,000.

Best advice is to dump the truck at 400,000 miles, in your kinda work maybe a little less . Barely change the oil but some tires on it and that’s it.
The old ways of keeping trucks forever seems extinct…….Pamela1990 Thanks this. -
I want to expand the amount of trucks we own. I want new trucks, not just all old trucks.
Also chose to get two tri drives. Someday, it won't be soon, I would like to have all newer trucks, and more trucks.
Unsure of the number we will eventually have, but could be 15, 20, 25, don't know.
Sadly they are discontinuing the T800, so will have to decide what to buy further in the future.
If I could still buy brand new T800 trucks with no emissions Caterpillar engines, I would have.ProfessionalNoticer and Oxbow Thank this. -
Hope to keep them around 10 years actually.
I like to keep stuff a while, even my F150 is 7, closer to 8 years old. -
A few local heavy haul guys around here are buying new and dumping the trucks after 3 years ……..
Not my way of doing things , but the Cascadia way is here to stay I guess……Pamela1990 Thanks this. -
I see it frequently here to.
But I tend to hang onto things for longer than most.Oxbow Thanks this. -
I have learned a lot about emissions maintenance on late model Cummins from Rawze.com . I hope the new trucks work well for you.
Oxbow and Pamela1990 Thank this. -
Technology in the last 20 years really hasn't made a 20 year old truck obselete in and of itself, especially for applications requiring off road use. Much of the technology has revolved around emissions, and electronic diagnosis. Sure, otr trucks are finally getting substantial improvements in fuel mileage, but no tremendous changes in technology.
I suspect the next twenty years will involve game changing advances though. Perhaps including hydrogen power, or electric drive motors, or who knows what. Sadly, I predict that a trucking company will have to update equipment more frequently than now in order to stay in business.
Even trailer technology and automation will probably change really quickly. Years ago electromagnetic trailer axle retarders we're available, and the possibilities for hauling heavy down steep grades was promising. I've driven a tractor that had an electromagnetic driveline retarder. It worked exceptionally well, but caused problems with driveline angles and front driver failures. But imagine being able to harness braking power on trucks, store it and then use it for propulsion like electric and hybrid cars do.
As alternative power sources become prevalent I would guess that all sorts of out of the box technology will produce a whole new way of doing the job.
It is a shame through the eyes of older folks like myself, but then again I wouldn't want to go back to using payphones on the tables of the truck stop restaurants either. Of course truck stop restaurants seem to be going the way of two-stroke Detroit's, so what do I know.Brettj3876, loudtom, shooter19802003 and 3 others Thank this. -
N you seen what happened when Kenny bought one @ 300k. Spec it, run it, dump it when the warranty is up seems a good cycle on new stuff/Cat sdp, Pamela1990 and Oxbow Thank this.
