Thinking about buying a truck but I can't get a straight answer out of the local owner ops. I'm in Utah and don't plan on going into California in a truck ever again. Do federal regulations require older trucks be retrofitted with DPFs or other emissions equipment? What standards do pre-DPF, pre-DEF trucks have to meet?

The reto fit dpf is a Cali thing.... -
Trucks that are older than 2007, I believe, must be retrofitted in order to run in California. The cost is about $!5,000. As I recall, California will allow older trucks to run a minimum amount of miles in the state without being retrofitted. If I lived in Utah, I would probably try to find a truck that could run in California.

If you're never going in to California I wouldn't worry about it.

California is the only state that currently requires DPF, etc. My husband & I are o/o's running a '99 Volvo everywhere but CA. Well, we don't run AK or HI but for different reasons
