I'd say you're hireable but expect some rejection. No matter what route you take you are committed to paying for school. Paying out of pocket frees up any commitment. But it's not like you can be real selective until you get a year in.
Schools will feed you a line and so will company recruiters with their prehire. You won't know until you show up for orientation and then each individual is given a thorough looking at. It's a gamble.
But for some reassurance felons are given second chances all the time. You're charges don't reflect theft or other concerns trusting you with freight or attitude problems. Texas use to teach guys in prison to get their CDL. When they got out they had a job.
The felony over 7 years is a plus!just_the, Tonythetruckerdude, Hitman and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks for the encouragement. I've been working toward this goal for a couple of years now - the bottleneck being the ability answer "no" to the 7-year felony. I've received a firm yes from an outfit that services the Permian basin, but you are absolutely correct - I have to have the CDL in hand w/ 1 year of experience to be qualified for that position. So to get there, I'd haul anything for a year. I'm not picky, and I work really hard.
From my understanding, I'm probably ok for an OTR position for that 1 year, but I read on another forum that the Manufacturing with Intent is an automatic industry wide disqualification, and its got me a little freaked out.mje Thanks this. -
Ist things first...get the CDL's...with all the endorsements you are able to get. Once you have the license , then you'll be in a position to talk to folks. The best advice on schools I can give is go the community college route. You may be able to get some financial-aid and also you'll get better training , they have no skin in the game so to speak , you'll have no contract hanging over your head to re-pay anyone for training and they will more than likely offer some sort of job placement opportunities. But , be ready for some rejections , lots of them..not only will the better companies be a little leery , you have to proof that you're gonna stay clean...not trying to judge your past , not my place...but would rather you know straight-up what you're gonna face....Again Good Luck...

Springfield; I'd go to Midwest Tech or Lincoln Land - most likely Lincoln Land; seems like the stronger program. Both have equivalent costs, and completion times.
mje Thanks this. -
Trucking can be a very unforgiving carreer. There's ppl that have 10 or more yrs when the felony was committed and companies still won't give them the time of day.I never heard of intent to be an automatic disqualification.Unless there is solid proof by the officials I wouldn't believe everything you read.
-
Agreed, and rightfully so about the unforgiving nature - I mean I get it - just don't want people under the influence hauling 20 tons of anything... big public safety issue.
-
But that does not mean you're not hireable, just means you cant give up and you need to try harder.Get on the phone and really sell yourself make the recruiter known that you really want to drive trk.

Panther will hire you. Call Coerjte in recruiting and tell her your circumstance. She wont sugar coat it, and if she "chooses" not to do business with you, theres always Carolina Convicts. Growing pot? 8 yrs ago? C'mon...the only difference between you and many others is YOU GOT CAUGHT. At least you can add "Reefer Experience" to your resume. Good luck!
mje, Jokingypsy and just_the Thank this.
