Yeah, man size rip rap was wicked. Granite about the size of basket ball to a small medicine ball, for the uninitiated. Sounded like WW3 in the bucket. Didn't start to roll until you were almost all the way up. Then BLAM, BLAM, BLAM like you never heard. Trailer all wiggling. They sent me to load it in a brand new 48' MAC aluminum frameless one time. I'm like; "You nuts?" "It's OK. It has a bed liner." "On the floor. You know what that's gonna do the sides, tailgate AND the bed liner? You can't dump rip rap in an aluminum trailer." "Fine cry baby. Go get a short steel one, but I don't wanna hear no crap about can't get a full 26 tons on it."

I do. I get to the job site (an Army Corps of Engineers job building jetty's on the Savannah River to try and keep the sand from building up at the shipping docks. Yeah. RIGHT.) and low and behold there are two of our guys with 48' aluminum frameless dumping side by side, maybe 10' between them (because that's what and where they were TOLD to do) about 2/3 up. As I'm grabbin' the mike to holler; over one goes. Thankfully, away from the other one. The other one continued up as it's happening and you can SEE the sides denting, trailer wiggling and getting cuts through the skin and the cylinder stages flexing like; THAT ain't goin' back down; It didn't. Got hung on the last stage. Imagine that. Nobody got hurt (some small cuts from broken glass but not really hurt. But it was a BAD day for the company and those drivers.

Dispatcher; "I didn't tell them they HAD to use the aluminum trailers. As a matter of fact I mentioned steel trailers on the yard but they wanted to use what they had. More weight they could haul. (We got paid percentage and the company billed by tonnage). Didn't want to swap. I don't know."

Yeah. RIGHT. AGAIN; Glad to be outta the dump game. LOL.

What a sh%tshow Aminal. The Dump game is a whole nother deal. Like the old saying goes........If you haven't torn a mud flap off you haven't drove a dump truck long enough. Reminds me of Logging. Too old to be doing either of those.

Hi okiedokie, I hear ya, dumpy truck ain't for everyone. Rip rap is nasty stuff as aminal mentioned. I used to put a little sand on the floor of the box first, to cushion them big rocks ,but saw many a side get tore up. I hauled sidewalk slabs on a tear out once, that would get hung up by the end gate, had to lower the box and have to take a sledge hammer and bust them up. Can be pretty boring too. Once stockpiling, I did 28 loads from one side of the pit to the other. Like you say, getting too old for that now.

Mudflap? How 'bout barn door style tailgates when the chain back failed? LOL.

"Hi. Oh great. How are you? Oh good. Yeah, I can't get the next load. Why? Oh sure, yeah. Um, the tailgate is in the bed. Why? The front end loader put it in there for me. Why? Because I asked him to. Why? It came off and was buried in the product. Why? I don't know. Hinges looked OK, Pinned back fine. Didn't see anything swing, break or fail. Nice smooth dump. Get out to latch the tailgate and the tailgate is off the trailer and in the pile. Tell ME why and we'll both know. Um, yeah, pretty sure it won't just snap back on. It's made by Rhodes; they build dump trailers not Lego; they make toys. Close, but not quite the same. Yes Ma'am. Sorry. No Ma'am. No disrespect intended. I was referring to Rhodes barn door tailgate design being like a cheap toy. Not any ignorance on your part about putting it back. Sorry I wasn't clear on that. My apologies, but no it won't just "hook back on". It's broke. I got it chained and strapped in the bed. I'll be heading to the shop now."

Fun times Lads. Fun times. It's crazy as all get out, but I'm sitting here grinning and enjoying the memories. LOL. Crazy daze.

I've hauled my share of rock/shale/dirt/etc. Have yet to take my turn at laying one over, but I'm sure my day is coming.

Stuff like this scares me. This guy was lucky he didn't get killed. If it would have fallen the other way, I don't know if he would have gotten out of the way in time or not.....

Love dumpy truck stories, never knew what the day was going to bring, listen to this,,,when I worked at the asphalt co., drove a tri-axle Mack, come in on a Mon. morn. boss says, go over to the local egg farm(HUGE), they need a tri-axle. Off I go, totally unprepared for what was next. So I goes in, the guy says, oh good, go around back and meet Joe, he'll show you what to do. He then went on to say, we had a big "die off" over the weekend, you'll be hauling the dead chickens,,,,OOOK, I goes around back, here's a pile of dead chickens the size of a garage, OMG, and the stench. Guy loaded them with a small front end loader,(plop, plop) 5 loads to a hole another guy dug w/an excavator few miles away.Disgusting! When I was done, I couldn't get that smell out of the box, and when I went back on asphalt, the guys on the paver said, WHAT WERE YOU HAULING??

Probably a frameless without single point suspension, they only balance on the rear axle of the trailer
