All right everyone, I hope this is the right place to put this question:
First, a little back ground on the company I'm looking into....the majority of their freight is end dump work, and they have a tanker division (mainly Hazmat) as well. They pay you 80% of the freight, per load. To rent an end dump trailer per week (5 days), it's $300 for the week ($60/day). To rent a tanker trailer per week, it's 10% of your gross to the truck, for that given week - example: if you gross $4500 for a week, the tanker trailer rental for that week is $450. This company maintains all of their trailers that you rent. They have a lot of safety nets and programs set up to make you succeed as an O/O. If you have no experience in end dump, they will train you on it. I forgot to mention, you are generally out for 5 days, and home on the weekends. You can stay out longer, if you prefer. I will probably stay out longer.
Next, a little back ground on myself...I have experience in both flatbed and tanker (fuel more specifically). I've always wanted to own my own truck and through much research and talking to people, I have found a commendable company that will help me get on my way with this (about 2 hours from my house). I do not have a wife or kids, or anything of that nature. More than likely, I will make this my actual home, and just use someone in my family's address, as my residency and a place to receive mail. I know a few people with this company, and they seem to be very happy, and do well for both themselves and their families. Now, I'm faced with one very tough question: do I want to do tanker or end dump?
I have no experience with end dump, but I know some people who do it (who are with this company I'm looking on going with). They seem to be doing very well for themselves, and love doing it. On the flip side, I love doing tanker work - which makes this decision harder.
I am not opposed to trying something new, but I love tanker work. Since I don't have any experience in end dump, I am a bit skeptical. I'm just seeking some people's opinions - especially those who are experienced in either one, or both (not necessarily through O/O or L/P). Like everyone else, I'm looking to make the most money possible, and am just curious if there is more money with tankers or end dump out there.
I just would like to make sure that I make both a thorough and thought-out decision. Any and all help/insight on this would be more than appreciated!
**I don't feel that it's necessary to disclose the name of said company.**

I love running tankers to, where I'm at now it is also 10% of the invoice if you don't have your own.
I believe variety is the spice of life so if they can get me a flatbed load I jump on it. i would probably choose the end dump, can probably switch back later if it's not for you right?
Anything but a friggin reefer again! -
i was leased to Ellsworth years ago running tankers and loved every minute of it until they went under or sold out. then went to flatbed and loved that. i see a lot of tanks moving filler and cement around my area and have debated about getting back into it. Schwerman has both flat and tanks but a buddy runs with Sunset Logistics doing tanks and dumps and doing pretty good.

One question ...
Does this company your looking at have company trucks that you are going to be competing with? -
-
This is not one of the mega companies, or anything like that. However, I do understand where you're coming from on that question.

i have also noticed some end dump companies that have trailer doors that open up to allow you to do palletized freight or maybe its for scrap dumping. i imagine that would be another revenue stream for those companies, which might equate to more $$$ for the driver.
hawkjr Thanks this. -
Just be careful with those "safety nets to help you succeed" They can quickly turn into debt slavery tools.
