Dude, in Ohio as long as you get them BEFORE you've gotten your hard copy you're good to go at no extra cost excepting Hazmat backround check from TSA. Take them as you want. They will go on your hardcopy when you purchase it. Otherwise , you'll have to pay the hardcopy fee again if you take the written tests after.
I JUST went through this. Waited to get the hardcopy til I passed the written Hazmat. Now I'm set. 1 state liceneing fee + TSA fee .e.
Endorsement question: can I go back for Hazmat and Tanker?

I would get hazmat after you get your CDL you may not work for any employer that required it.But then again it never hurts to get it now.

That's the problem with Hazmat. Its one of dang if you do and dang if you don't. It is nice having if your company hauls hazmat once in awhile and the only load available is a hazmat load. Otherwise a driver might be sitting for a day or three until a nonhazmat load becomes available.Plus hazmat loads tend to pay a little more depending on the comapny. These are the biggest two biggest reasons I keep hazmat on my CDL.
Bigarmin88 Thanks this. -
Good point and also way it seems drivers with hazmat move more than drivers who don't,I know in the expedited field its a big deal to have it.
