This has to be some where in the forum already but a quick search and couldnt find exactly what I wanted. When you get your cdl I hear you have to get them renewed every year. If I dont get hazmat when I first get them, can I just take the test and background test and have it added when I get it renewed for the first time. If I did try to add it on later would I have to go through the whole cdl process again like all the tests and driving tests?

In my state, Missouri, the CDL A is good for 6 years. The Hazmat expires at the same time. The hazmat is two parts. A written test and a background check. The background check requires you to summit your fingerprints and pay for the check.

As a felon with an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering, I do not know what they are looking for to disqualify someone from the hazmat license.

No driving test is required for endorsements.Say you've had your CDL for a couple yrs and now decide you want to add an endorsement to it,all you need to do is take the written test. But for hazmat theres a lot more detail then just taking a written test but again no driving test is required.

Im pretty sure I would qualify to get one, because my drug charges were personal use. I just dont think I will need it till maybe a year or more after I start driving. Plus if I do get accepted to swift when I come back to get my cdl. I dought I will have enough time to wait for my background check to come back before I need to leave with mentor. That is my understanding anyway could be wrong not sure.

Oh ok I see the other post just wanted to make sure it could be just added later.

You can always tack it on later; it cost 86.50 to have Morphotrust to do your fingerprints for background check; probably at some point consider TWIC as well, they all help you earn more...

This is not completely true. Most endorsements do not require a road test; however, the S (school bus) and P (passenger) both require a written test and skills (road) test to add the endorsements. It will probably add a restriction 55 as well (Except Class A Bus).

If you think the state examiner was hard the first time, go back to take the test again after having a CDL for a couple years. I practically had to quote the book word for word (she had a copy with her looking at it during the test to check me).

Please forgive me being slightly out of context, I just wanted to clarify as I don't know who might see this post in the future. I know from experience that this is the case as I drive coaches. Complaining dispatchers have nothing on a load of 56 angry passengers.

I've had my cdl for 6 months. Just went the other day and had tanker, hazmat, doubles-triples added on. Background check is close to a hundred bucks and the long wait in a government office. Went ahead and did TWIC as well when i was in there for the background check. Still have to go pick up the card. Only spent $40 total at the revenue office getting the endorsements though. $10 per endorsement plus $10 for a duplicate license. Also, cdl practice tests on this website are much harder than the actual tests so i would recommend using these practice tests and you'll probably pass on first attempt. I did
