Engine brake - trainer never told me what is it

I agree with your thoughts on having driven a year and not learned about exhaust brakes.
But lets go further back. He went through a CDL school and they did not discuss using a Jake ?No wonder these newer drivers have a lot to learn.
And drive a whole year in Canada [ or anywhere ] and not lock your power divider in ?chompi Thanks this. -

Yes, i was trained internally (i think i had better trainning than most) and i was told NOT to use engine brake! Thinking about it, i think my company must think:
OK, if let's say you are going down hill or on turns in rain or snow, you use engine brake, which drags your tractor, and your tractor or trailer ran out of control. Now you are screwed! Where as if i didn't use engine brake and just sliding downhill on a gear. At least i have one less factor to lose control. It like you dont wanna brake during a turn or when you are already skidding, similar theory...
I also remember my trainer said that it is ok to use engine brake on good road conditions. But what i thought back then was, if i dont need it on bad conditions, why do i need it on good conditions? So i justy ignored it all together!
Not sure if what ive said above make sense, but i have been through a year including winter without any problems. Anyways thanks for the advice and teachings on engine brakes, i will try it out sometimes and see if i like it. -
Hey drivers
just kidding. Exhaust brakes can be used effectively in slick conditions. That's why they have different setting. 2-4-6 yes. Member the old Detriots that had left bank and right bank settings. Also power dividers engage your front drive axle not the rear. There are also other types of braking systems besides Jakes, Brake Saver is the brand name Canadian truckers prolly know about this set up. Ok bye....

Few yrs ago when I went through CDL school they didnt discuss jake breaks said wed learn when we got on the road. I hate driving a truck with a weak jake break i prefer to jake and shift rather than break.
