We have never owned a big truck & are considering purchasing a Volvo to pull our Horse Trailer - want to know the good, the bad & the ugly about these trucks & engine comparisons.
What can you tell me about them please - MPG, reliability, engine weaknesses....
AND, anything we need to know about owning our first big truck
THANKS!!!

Honestly. Don't! Unless it's absolutely necessary. I'm 3 generations in this business and I can tell you truck s today are expensive, unreliable and every one is totally different then the other. In the old days you could go to a general parts guy and get what you needed. Today 80% of everything are dealer items. Engine work is near impossible to do yourself because everything needs to be calibrated with a laptop and Volvo only gives the dealer s access to VCADs.
If you're occasionally moving horses. Buy an old Mack or a Peterblit (80's vintage) with a 3406b CAT engine. Both are relatively cheap and easy to work on. Parts are easily available and almost anyone can fix them. Newer trucks are just junk. I run an 07 Volvo and I plan on fixing it next with a stick of dynamite! -
we won't be putting near as many miles on as you truckers do - we will only be on the road on week-ends, but, most every weekend & 500-1000 per week-end
Not looking at anything new, an 03-07 most likely
It is more of a safety issue to step up to a bigger truck, the regular pickups just dont have great braking power - we are currently towing with an 06 Dodge 3500 - GREAT truck, good pulling ability, but, braking is not too good, especially when you get going down the 6% grades & mountains -
Why not look for a single axle? T300 Kenworth or similar. 300HP, air brakes and a 7,8 or 10 speed. It would have oodles of braking power, decent pulling power and less parts to replace. Tires for example. Unless you are pulling 100,000 lbs of horses you don't need 450+ HP
JReding Thanks this. -
agreed chevy529!! We were planning on removing one of the rear axles - I didn't know Kenworth made that truck - I will do more research! Thanks for the tip!

Almost all brands make single axle medium duty trucks. Including Mitsubishi. Fuso I think it is called.
You can even find heavy duty trucks with a single axle if they were hauling light loads, like Mail.
I would lean towards a single axle class 8 with a 350 HP engine and a 10 speed. But that is me.
I just did a quick Google check and there are oodles of T300's for $30000ish. You can even find them with automatics and sleepers.
Whatever matches your needs
EDIT: Stay away from the small Cat engine as it can't be rebuilt I heard. It is a throwaway engine supposedly.
EDIT #2: After giving it some thought. Unless you have some driver training a truck with hydraulic brakes and an automatic might be better for you. They are available everywhere as well. Good luck. If you have more questions PM me.

might be okay for you. The rear axle ratio may be a little low (slow) for you. Depends.

Make sure you buy some thing pre EGR (started in 03 on the 04 models) . Almost any brand engine before EGR were very reliable ! Should be able to find some thing that will fit your needs . The truck paper is a great resource for shopping for a heavy used truck . Best of luck! And let us know what you are looking at , and what you end up with.
tweeter15 Thanks this. -
Those are Day Cabs - we are looking for one with a sleeper
-
Ah.
You didn't mention that.
The only single axle you will probably find with a sleeper would probably be an expediter truck. Those are usually really long wheelbase and 6-800000 miles when they are sold.
