Oh yeah, for sure. If he signed off on it, then that's one thing. But, that still leaves all the workmanship issues; improperly cut counter bores, mismatched ring sets..etc that need to be resolved.
Engine dilemmas...

They document that too. Mismatched rings? You going to be fighting a losing battle. Now if an injector goes out or a water pump that would be covered. With a platinum it would. Not gold.
-
There was some questions on if a heavy haul fire ring was installed on top of two standard rings. If so, that's a big no no. And might be one of the reasons why it was pushing oil out. It may be futile, but in my mind it doesn't hurt to ask these questions. I'm fully aware of what's covered under a gold kit. And anything above the block is not part of it, but if I can get some cost deferred due to workmanship issues, than its worth the time to ask and research.

Absolute insanity to rebuild the lower end and not do anything to the valve train.
The lowerend on these engines are bulletproof as they are only turning 13-1600 rpms
The valvetrain is the one thing on the engine that is taking all the beating.
To me it sounds like the valve lash was set to loose and it beat the cam to death
Gold kit includes no head
Platinum kit comes with head but still no mention of a new camshaft.
There is a guy on a offshore race boat site that i frequent that is the absolute God of Cam Grinding named BOB Madera
.
I can get you a number if you want to talk to him if anything if he can't grind you a new cam he will be able to tell you why it failed.Last edited: Feb 2, 2015

Yeah, unfortunately it's a pretty chitty situation, but it can be fixed.
That's a good point, maybe I'll swing that through the rep tomorrow. -
what does a whole new head cost with a new cam ? 3000?
They are on the hook for the block no matter what under the warranty if the counter bores and incorrect rings created an oil issue.
The cam issue is a totally different subject that has nothing to do with the block problem or the oil issue. It was simply stumbled upon at the same time in my mind.
I wouldn't rush to commit to anything they are selling until you get all the facts . -
That's why I'm calling up the rep in the morning. I want things in writing. And I want to clear up what's being done as far as the warranty and get the price quotes in writing as well
-
I would tell them that you are willing to pay the cost of a new head and cam and they can eat the parts for the block and the labor for everything since the head had to come off from it anyways.

How did you make out with your guys?
Here is a little article written by Pittsburgh Power about improperly rebuilt Cat engines i think you should give a read .
it sounds like mechanics re cutting the cylinder bore to have room to shim up the sunken cylinder liners is a common mistake made.

Cat has been basically washing their hands of this, since there's no definitive cause of the issues.
So, we found a good deal on a platinum kit and we're going to install it in our shop with some help from a cat tech that went out on his own
