    I have a strong automotive background ( including Diesel pickups) but not OTR. Looking at 80's - 90's era stuff , what are pro's and con's of ; cat 3406B / 3408 , Cummins N14, BCIV , 400 and Detroit 60 12.7?
Power, cost, mileage (more to it than the engine) service aspect of these engines?
Is one significantly better than the others?
    Were these intercooled ?
Could an engine or exhaust brake be added if not equipped?
Any info or exprerience with this would be greatly appreciated

I have several more questions concerning drivetrains, truck usage and related stuff but prefer to keep this thread engine only.

    Thanks

3406B if driven right is a good engine with good power possible with some pump work

3408 is a V8 configeration and i don't believe it came with a turbo, some one will correct me if i am wrong

The N14 is a great engine capable of 525 HP in stock trim very reliable

the 12.7 detroit im am not a fan of i know they can be made to make 800HP but just not a great engine IMO

they have Jake's and the cats could also have a Cat Retarder

Thanks for the info - is the N14 a "big cam" cummins or is that a different animal? Had a Detroit where I worked years ago, made alot of noise but not much motion!

tough questions right there. Much of it is opinion, kinda like the ford/chevy, bud/miller etc arguements. Everyone has their favorites. There are alot of loyal Cat people. As NWMaxi said, the b's can easily make alot of power. Every motor had good points. If any one was unquestionably better than the rest, the rest would be out of buiness. As you mentioned, the ole two stroke detroits were one of the popular motors, in their day. They are nearly extinct nowadays, thanks mostly to the EPA.

N14 are easy to work on, you can set injectors without the need for dial tools etc, 3 piece head, injector wires are external so you can easy isolate if you have a miss fire, . I own a M11 and a series 60, but if you want a easy engine to work on yourself I would be buying the N14

NWMAXI, Noticed your pit bull , I agree with the statement. Government r wankers, I was in animal control for about 4 years and I came across lots of pit bulls that were fantastic placid dogs.

    NWMAXI Thanks this.
