    So here's the deal...

I'm finally out on my own, in my rig, on my 34hr break..diggin it. Hauled some heavy ##### chemicals from Portland to Stockton, then some misc. groceries to Walmart Distro, in Phoenix, and I just dropped off 11k lbs of Dorritos at Frito Lay in Denver.

    Yay me!

    Two things,

First, my tractor is very slowly leaking oil AND it hiccups, stutters, and misfires under heavy acceleration. Sometimes it just seems a little random even. It also puffs black smoke from the exhaust when it misfires.
    I don't think this is normal...:biggrin_25524:

    Second....

What's the deal with folks who pull into parking spaces at truck stops, tractor first...compared to backing in. I've seen a few folks do this here and there, I did it once too when it seemed soooo much easier and I had a line of trucks behind me. Is this a big deal? ...Does pulling in tractor first a really newb thing to do? ...or is just uncool?

    opinions, ideas, smart remarks?

well the truck obviously needs to be looked at. These newer trucks have all the electronics and stuff so thats a pain.

The 2nd IMO is drivers nose in when it is easier to back out or just to get away from engine noises and headlights..

    Ahh...yes,
I does seem like it would help protect you from noise and lights. I had thought of that too.

If I park nose in, do I run much of a risk of being snubbed by other truckers? It's often easier, quieter, and safer. (assuming you have a good, clear space to back out to in the morning)

Have that engine checked over before it does permanent damage- it'll only take so much abuse before it breaks.

And sometimes you get so tired you can't back up. Really.

After a long hard drive your ears are ringing, your fingers and toes are tingling, you're shaky and your eyes burn from lack of sleep. Pulling in is sometimes the best way to park without bumping into anything.

And then, some drivers are just plain STUPID. They pull in straight in a half full parking lot- when their rest break's over they can't get out because trucks are parked in spaces behind them and the parking spaces were not designed to be backed out of. Sometimes there isn't enough room for a cab and trailer to back out without hitting someone behind the trailer.

The misfire is probably the EGR cough. The EGR is opening when it shouldn't and it's causing the engine to run poorly. You will see your mileage drop considerably when the engine is running like that. My truck had it until the ECM shut down the EGR and threw a CEL, which Ive been running on for months now, lol. It runs great now that the EGR is turned off.

    Is it a Detroit?

yes its a detroit. likely an 05 or 06 schneider rig on its way out of service.
Boogers. Just hang tight with it til you are off your training board. then you'll move up to a less miles truck OR when that truck Sh**s the bed, you should move to another.

my first 2 trucks had to have the fuel filter changed out when this would happen. Was told it was water in the filter , but I would drain it when I fueled.Does seem like it loses power at RPM?

This is a good piece of advice, and I won't even charge you ! ALWAYS park so you can get out and moving EASILY in the morning. NEVER park where you might get boxed in. And backing is the biggest cause of accidents, so, minimize your backing. Think about it, you will be backing out of a space with no visibility to see what's going on. Why risk hitting something, right ?
