My engine blew up and I need some help engine shopping. I have a 2005 W-900, it originally had a Cummins in it. The engine that blew thats in it now is a 2004 CAT C15 acert (serial number MXS). What can I put in it that will fit and DOT won’t mess with me? The dealership just keeps saying I cant go backwards, that it has to be at least an 04 and the serial number has to be MXS or NXS. If it had a twin turbo in it than I can’t put a single turbo or a 6NZ. Does the law follow the truck or the engine? If I can’t put anything past an 04 and I don’t what anything after 07 that doesn’t leave a whole big range. Please help!
Engine shopping What can I put in my 2005 W-900

All I have ever heard is it is illegal to alter the emissions on a truck. I don't know if I'd be worried about law enforcement so much as I would about shops not working on it in case of an emergency. I've never seen or heard of DOT checking emissions except in CA. But every dealership, and some independent shops, I have walked into in recent years has signs posted that will not work on trucks with emissions altered. I can't say that they would indeed follow through with that, or view an engine dropped in the the same as de-rating. I wouldn't want to chance it unless I ran a small region and knew where I could take it beforehand.

Legally? Emissions have to match what came in it since it’s not a glider. So 04 and newer would be your emission tier.

My truck is pre-emissions.

Acert is an emissions setup. Cat's version of an egr motor if I'm not mistaken.
Ericfrancs101, drh72 and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
You can put any engine you want but not at a dealership.
Will it meet emissions most likely not.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
I’d hate to pay for the labor to swing a motor at a dealership.
Around here it’s $180ish a hour.W923 Thanks this. -

Legally speaking you can put any on road engine in there as long as it is not a lower emissions tier than what the chassis left the factory with originally.
For the sake of simplicity just drop in what came out of it. Swapping to something else is going to complicate things a bit.Bean Jr., W923, Last Call and 1 other person Thank this.
