My 1999 VNL64T VED12 will unexpectedly shut down while running down the road. No notice, error codes, just shuts off. It might run for weeks and then this problem occurs.Generally it will restart. Sometimes it will start using the ignition key. Some time the key does nothing, engine wont crank or tlurn over, and I have to jump the starter with a screw driver.
The local Volvo dealer cant find the problem. Probably cause it's running when I take it in for diagnostics. Any chance it could be a faulty ignition switch??
Thanks

Take a good look at your ignition feed circuit. If it shuts down and then won't crank with the switch, you have lost power feed to the switch. Is the auto reset circuit breaker on the ignition feed circuit heating up?
CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
Also check the little ECM hot wire at the battery. Over time them connection crimps will vibrate to the point of breaking. Yours might be hanging by a thread that you can't see for the insulator boot or corrosion built up under it.

This can be a bad ground in the ignition circuit or bad neutral safety switch.
Start at the neg terminal on your battery(s) and work your way back, look for intermittant resistance readings.
Clean or tighten the ground connection.
Adjust or replace the neutral safety switch. -
