Last week guy I knew blew his engine. Don't no what or how only that
The shop is saying needs a new one can't be repaired. (Must be hole in block)?
Any way he does not want to repair instead he is going to buy a new truck.
Truck had a volvo engine in it, says if I want he will give it to me for my kid .
If not will sell to salvage yard.
Question can I put a detroit engine in it? If so how much more hassle is it
than a normal engine swap? Years ago used to do engine swaps on CARS and other
Than motor mounts or some cutting to make it fit wasn't a problem.

It's a whole lot more trouble than the truck would ever be worth. Consider it like swapping a BB EFI Chevy into a Honda Civic. Anything can be done if you want to spend the time and money but you'll never get that money back.

And what do you wind up with? An old Volvo that the guy didn't consider worth repairing (which says alot about the rest of the truck).

The electronics for such a swap alone will drive you nuts.

Why not just put another Volvo engine in it? Save the hassle. The price of the truck is definitely good ($0), for the price of an engine, you got a truck.

    What year/model Vulva is it?

I would get the truck buy the same model motor that was in it do the swap and sell it or run it till it die's. A Volvo's resale value is not that high so the more you put into it changing to a diffrent engine the more you will lose. Plus there alot more to it than just putting a diffrent motoer inn, the electronics, bell housing might be diffrent , might have to modify drive shaft and so on.

Well, to revive an old thread.

I have a 2006 International 9400i with Cummins ISX. Been thinking thru engine swap possibilities. Got a call from my local shop I use, there was a recently wrecked 9400 that is being parted out, with a Detroit 12.7 pre-egr 500 hp that had recently been rebuilt. Can get the engine for about $8K and shop will yank out my ISX and install the Detroit. Wiring harness can be redone to match up. Hardware, brackets, etc taken from wreck. Want to ditch the 3.42 rear ends in my truck for 3.55's or 3.70's to match up more to the Detroit and what I haul. Shop is checking the wreck, but thinks rears are geared the way I want. Those rears were redone about the same time as the engine. Just swap out my rears for those.

Basically, get out of emissions engine and get different drive train for a lot less than just a Cummins recon engine would cost in the crate.

What year is that other 9400i???? IH quit using detroit engines back in 2002 I believe.

If you can swap everything out from the other exact same model truck it may not be too bad. Just know that you will not be able to run California once you do the swap, but if you are like me, then that is pointless anyways cuz i don't go there.

Question tho, how much are they going to give you for your old ISX engine??? the turbo's alone are worth a few grand.

Will sell the ISX on my own or see if shop owner can unload it for me and get a reasonable price. Haven't discussed price for the ISX yet. Shop owner has done these swaps before and has a handle on wiring issues and such to do it. The 9400 is basically the same from 1997 on up in many respects, just like the 9900. The engine is a DDEC IV, so that would basically mean a truck that is 1998 or newer. Wiring harness will probably have to be modified, but he has done that before.

Most of us that are doing these rogue type of things are already aware of California. And, yes, this swap would raise the ire of CARB. Haven't run California in over a decade and hopefully never will again. Matter of fact, I make a concerted effort to stay East of I-25. Nothing further west that I need to do. I generally keep within a 600 mile radius of home.

Anyone know what it will take to swap a ddec2 in place of a ddec3. I wantg to run the engine on the ddec2 ecm as it is a low mileage sweet running engine. The truck is a 1995 379 Pete. Any and all info much appreciated.
