I would get the DD15 maybe the DD16 just for fun. I'm driving a DD13 it good engine. You can look online and find life of the engine. The DD13 was like 1,000,000 andthe DD15 was like 1,250,000 miles. Look for the B ratings the DD15 is B50 , 50% of the engine will go 1,250,000 not sure how good the rating really is because the Paccar MX13 is like B10 so 90% of the engine should go 1,000,000 miles and they don't seem to be doing so well on that.

My company truck has the DT-12 auto shift. It nice, it really nice going downhill. They have a special Downhill Mode most people don't seem to know about. It lets you lock the truck into a set speed limit like 40MPH and the engine and transmission will hold the speed. Most driver keep using the engine brake the old way and don let the computers and trasnmision do it thing. You can't use it in snow or ice because you not supposed to use engine brake then.

It works any speed down to 30 MPH your just setting the cruise control in a little different way to override the normal cruise control because it had window of like 6MPH over set speed before engine brake come on.

    Depends on the application.
Although a 13 litre engine today will pretty much do anything. It use to be the standard engine size until emissions came along.
15 litre is standard now a days.
16 litre for hauling logs off a mountain dirt road with 20 % grades.
A had a DD15 560/1850 , now have a DD16 600/1850. Pulling 140,000 lbs, can’t really tell the difference pulling. But the DD16 has a much stronger jake to slow me down.
I did run a 13 litre (12.8) Mercedes 450/1550 doing the same job. It was way slower and ran a lot hotter. But it still got the work done at the end of the day. And was better on fuel.

some of us don't like to put our lives in the hands of a 'computer'.. My dt12 glitches out all the time for no reason at all, I couldn't imagine giving it all the control going down a mountain, only for it to glitch out and throw me in neutral , which it has done before many times, I will never run it in auto mode going down a hill for that reason. To each their own but eventually one of these auto trucks is gonna have guys hitting runaway ramps for no reason other than a computer glitch

turn off your brain and let computer decide your downhill speed and braking... )))

The B rating you are referring to is for Biodiesel percentage. B10 is 10% Biodiesel B50 is 50% Biodiesel.

no. B rating is related to lifespan of engine.

Mine has never glitched yet. If someone goes down a hill and don't touch the brakes or keep foot on the brakes it will go into neutral. As soon as someone touch the brakes it will go into gear. If someone never turns on the engine brake it will also go into neutral.

Mine has been trouble free so far with 320,000 miles on it. I'm really impressed with the Down Hill mode and the engine braking power at the higher RPMs. Now I can go down hill 1,200 to 2,200 RPM. Leting the computers crank up the RPMs to 2,200 RPMs take some getting use to.
