I’ve always loved trucks. I’m 52 healthy and just bored of working in the surf industry. I mean its miles of girls in bikinis and endless days of Margaritas. Its just exhausting.
Anyway, I’ve driven all across the nation, often pulling a trailer with a diesel chevy van or my OBS F250 7.3. If i have 4 days off i’d drive to Montana from San Diego just to snowboard for two. Just did a 3600 mile trip to Vancouver island. Made it from Ventura to Seattle in about 21 hours. No
Worries.
Heres the thing as i consider changing careers. I’ve never done any drugs...until January 2nd of this year when weed became legal in California. My wife and i had some edibles a couple of times. It was fun. So does anyone know if that precludes me? I dont want to go through all of the schooling (i’d just pay for it upfront) and then get denied. I can spend the rest of my life doing what I’m doing. My wife and 9 year old son are the same with road trips. They’d go along. Yes we home school.
I’d probably like to drive mostly on the west coast / California. Mostly because I hate the midwest and east coast and all your funny accents. Just joking, well mostly joking. Nahhh I’m joking.
I’m a serious person with a real east coast style work ethic. I know nothing other than what i’ve been reading here and you havent scared me off yet. Theres a school called 101 school of trucking they seem highly rated. I’ve watched CDL videos on YouTube and most of that seems easy to comprehend and easily doable with practice.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
Enjoying these threads.

Some companies do hair follicle testing that can detect drug use up to a year later.
truadvocate Thanks this. -
Is that still relevant if it’s legal in California? I’m guessing yes because of federal law.
Weird. I never did any drugs because they weren’t legal. They become legal and now it may bite me in the ###.truadvocate Thanks this. -
Plenty of companies don't do the hair testing, providing you understand that you don't get to do that ever while holding a CDL. Your company can random you at any time and it stays in your system for a while.truadvocate Thanks this. -
Wait. I was supposed to say “asking for a friend”, or should’ve had my wife ask. LOL.
Not interested in weed. I barely drink (maybe 3 jack and cokes a year) a friend who lives on burritos and bong hits gave us some. Im not interested in getting dead or killing people while behind the wheel. I haven’t had a ticket (other than parking) in 30 years. I’d like to keep it that way.skellr Thanks this. -

A cdl is regulated by federal law, even though each state issues the cdl.
Using pot is illegal for cdl drivers even if they live in a state where pot is legal.
Since you did some pot in Jan., I'd go with a company that only does urine drug test, not hair follicle test.
I think Navajo Express and Stevens Transport just do urine drug test and they both hire new cdl graduates.Need4Speed and otterinthewater Thank this. -
If or when I get to the next step is honesty the best policy? I mean do I tell a recruiter the story? I don’t like gambling with stuff that goes on my permant record.
