So, I decided to go with Tampa Roadmaster. Probably not the best option but was the only option in my current situation.
Anyone have any idea what the hiring is like out of tampa these days? I'm sure that werner and swift are going to be a couple options... trying to avoid werner after all the bad posts i have seen about them though.
I am hoping that I can do solo OTR, because I really don't like the idea of teams with someone i don't know. Not planning on doing any leasing either.
Are most companies training/orientations around 2 months? Not looking forward to trying to survive off the low pay of training for that long but i'm sure it will pay off in the long run.
Any advice/info on what to expect during or right after school would be appreciated. Looking forward to being on the road!
enrolled for school starting 5/23/11

Just keep an open mind from now on. And remember, there are a few things that can de-rail your carreer, such as high blood pressure, a poor driving record, bad mouthing from former employers, test failures (driving), even dozing off during orientation class could get you sent home. So, be on your toes, and make trucking your top priority until you get thru school, get your CDL, and get hired somewhere.

Anyone know if May hires out of Florida?

Good luck with school, I have two suggestions for work. Bigrigs.com is a good site to fill out multiple apps at once and for a company Roehl seems pretty good, Im starting with them next month.

Take some time and write down your goals and wants. What do you want out of a company? Of course pay is the top but look towards your future and what is going to help you. I believe that everyone is working towards a retirement and if there's some that are not you still need an nest egg to fall back on. You can not live on SS alone.
Set yourself some goals. Where do you want to be in 1yr,5yr,and so on? If you just stop at finding a job then you have no direction and you might as well plan on working for those bottom feeders forever. Do you want a special kind of hauling? Study the different types of driving and specialties and see if you want one of those. I know sooner or later there's going to be a need for very professional drivers to haul nuclear waste. Or hauling explosives and military type equipment. Or maybe local driving and hauling gasoline. To name just a few. You just need direction so you can preform your job with hope and satisfaction. -

You can also do your planning for OTR. You want to find the company that is going to help you the most. For example, you might be opffered a tanker job OTR and after a couple of years you could move local and haul gasoline. They mostly want 2 years tanker experience. That would be your goal. The other type of planning is the investments you can make into your retirement and what kinds of plans do they have. You've got to look at all the aspects of a job when you're looking. -
So, I see a lot of posts from people saying once they finish their training that they are waiting for a truck. one even said they had been waiting for 2 weeks. was just wondering what happens during that waiting period. as in, are you at home during that time? if so do they put you up in a hotel? and are you paid something during this time? Starting to get worried about the money struggles I will have the first couple of months during training and possibly waiting for a truck.
thanks for any answers.
