They needed to find a way to stop missing out on that FET money.112racing Thanks this.

It is common knowledge that both Volvo and Navistar, neither of whom produces gliders, put maximum pressure on the EPA to outlaw them. Gliders are clearly a loophole large enough to drive an oversized load through. Even Daimler German HQ expressed no support for continuing glider production and has since taken down the website dedicated to extolling the virtues of a Freightliner glider.
112racing, 06driver and Oldironfan Thank this. -
Is it true also that no Truck brand makes Gliders? Anybody should be able to purchase a new cab and frame from a manufacturer and have their own drivetrain mated to it?HopeOverMope Thanks this.

Did it say the emissions were the same whether you had a new motor or an old one?

This is par for the course and it's constantly happening in the background with all the Federal alphabet groups AND Congress. Money talks! Those who sit around and blame whatever President they don't like are fools. Stop letting them divide us over Left vs Right. They're both wings of the same bird and as long as we're too busy fighting they'll rule over us forever. At least until they run what's left of our once great nation into the ground that is.
Oldironfan and otterinthewater Thank this. -

While theoretically possible, you and I both know that to purchase a truck in pieces costs 5 times the value of the entire new complete vehicle. the advantage of a glider is it has been spec'ed for a specific drivetrain and a minimum of individually purchased part numbers would be required. Even with that effort they can be a nightmare depending on the experience of the company or individual doing the final assembly. Hence their poor resale value.Oldironfan Thanks this. -
Currently they don’t have poor resale value and the stigma of a glider is practically gone. But as you said, assembly is key. My boss has one guy that assembles our gliders start to finish. Does everything in the same order on every truck. The only issue I’ve had with this one was a KW problem, it wasn’t because of the guy who put it together.

No he didn't. He's still Editor in Chief.

Big corporation tries to influence government agency.
People are surprised?BigHossVolvo, Studebaker Hawk and 06driver Thank this. -
In 5 years no manufacturer will sell gliders. They will be just like an auto manufacturer.
You do not go to Chevy and buy a Dana transmission.
Class 8 manufacturers are already building their own drive trains. Even PACCAR bought the old Mann(?) design for their own motor and will mate it with something with their name on it.
Daimler and International have already done so. Writing has been on the wall for a decade. Let the chest thumping and teeth nashing begin.
