I am looking into getting a local p&d job, either with estes, southeastern, averitt, ETC:
I filled out an app a few days ago for a combo position. (Local/Regional is what the ad said) Wasnt really interested in it because of the word "regional". But I figured it cant hurt to fill it out, so I did & received a call from a recruiter today. I asked for a job description & she said basically what I expected. Dock, Local & some "hub runs" wuth the possibility of being gone for a day or so.
I told her I dont think I am interested, but I will give it some thought & keep her #. I dont like the idea of the uncertanity of what shift ill be working. Would prefer something a little more "structured". I work M-F now home every night & about 12 hour days. I dont want to lose that for a job I'm not sold on 100%. This is the first company to call me back didn't want to jump on it so soon with the possibility of me landing the ideal job I want.
Can someone eleaborate more on this position?

She described it fairly. It used to be called "Utility" and some drivers would do it to get their foot in the door. Some actually like the variety. But I've seen Estes drivers complain about their classifications because there are 4 (P&D, linehaul, hub, and combo), and seniority might not transfer from one to the other if you switch jobs. Ask the drivers at http://www.truckingboards.com/bb/forums/estes-express-lines.52/ for more information.

All the different classification will have different hours. Hub runs are usually at night. If you want mon thru friday daytime I would weight for a p&d position somewhere. They all have different payscales as well. I work there and got lucky and got a p&d position from the get go. If had to do combo I wouldn't have done it but thats just me.

Thanks for the replies and yeah I think I'm going to wait to see if I can't get a local job. And if for some reason I'm still looking six months down the road I would consider the combo position just to get my foot in the door. Because it seems like the combo position would not be as hard to get as a local P&D job.

It may also help if you have some p&d experience. You could try central transport in durham or wilson freight just to get some time in and then move on. It would probably be better if you waited until spring everybody fairly slow this time of year.
Texas_hwy_287 and herring22 Thank this. -
Ward in durham is also hiring forgot about them.

Ward in Durham had like 5 different apots open, I literally filled out an app for every position. 2 line haul & 3 local I think.
How is Ward? Never hear much about them. And should I call them you think and inquire? -
The pay is comparable to every body else I think start around 22 and top at around 25. The benefits i'm not sure about but the drivers I see around seem to be pretty happy there. All these ltl jobs are about the same anyway you just have to see which one fits you best. I would apply and see what they have to say. I would call it can't hurt. The only bad thing I see is I don't think they have a match on there 401k but not sure about that.

I'm kind of kicking myself for not going for this position after getting a phone interview for it in the San Antonio area. Part of it might've been due to my resistance to have to relocate a second time. But after being told by the Phoenix terminal manager that two years of doubles experience was needed to get on with their line-haul, I've been switching gears and applying to Estes PnD or any other Combo positions I run across. Just another road in my so far, year-long quest to get away from the food-grade nightmare.
