Kinda new to the trucker's forum, but have quite a bit of experience in the feild. I have my own Hot Shot Co now (including dot's, authority) but I'm looking to switch over to Full loads instead of LTL. My long term plan is to drive company for a while, then switch to o/o when insurance isn't going to cost two arms and legs a year. I am looking at companies in my neck of the woods and was wandering if anyone had any info on Evans Equipment in Butler, IN. They haul Vans, and Flatbed. Equipment looks Ok, but there seem to be alot of trucks sitting at home terminal (atleast on the weekends) and their SSR is at 94. (HOLLY COWS) Just wandering if anyone had worked for them?? Thank's for the info..

I see them running the midwest a lot, but I have passed their yard and noted quite a bit of stuff parked there. But a few months back, they were having quite a sale on equipoment, I think I remember counting up about 30 trucks in the ad. So they may well be just updating equipment. Also, just looking at the yard is a n extremely poor indicator of anything. They could be running a lot of regional freight and the drivers are home for the weekend, they could have excess trucks because of sales and new ones coming in, etc. My employer has had many trucks sitting on our lot, and it's because we bought new ones. As the new ones are issued out, old ones come in, and then some of them are reissued, and olde still ones come in. Eventually they get sold, at a time determined by the financial people. So for the time being, the lot has plenty of empty trucks and it doesn't indicate anything except that trucks are parked there. Doesn't make us a bottom feeder company, just some folks that bought new trucks.

Same thing, go by on a Friday nite or Saturday, and the lot is full of daycabs. Why, because those are all local trucks that run Chicago and they are off for the weekend. Doing a "drive by shooting" of the parking lot is misleading and very foolish. And it will mislead you from a possible good company.

Thank's Burky for the info. Have you ever talked to any company drivers and heard whether or not they are happy with the company. I made an attempt to contact the company this past week, but I work two jobs(full time electrician, part time hot shot hauler) so with my schedule it makes it hard to catch up with the regular 9 to 5'ers. If you know of anyone that runs for them I would love to get into contact with them just to "chew" at their ear for a while.

I'm a very professional person and have a great work history and I don't want to make the mistake of signing on with a company that is not going to fit me, as well as I want to be sure that I fit them also. I plan on staying with the company that I go to as long as they continue to take care of me. Hopefully I will have a long, meaninfull relationship with whom ever I chose. I have narrowed down my search to 4 companies. Those being, TMC (good and bad), Boyd Bros (again good and bad), Roehl, and Evans. Without having to much info on Evans, I would prefer to work for them just because it's close to home, and one of my top priorities is home time. And I know the operating lanes that are available in my area, as well as yours, and I know that my home time "should" be above average.

Again thanks for your time and info Burky!! Appreciate it!!

I do my "drive-bys" of terminals on the first morning of company orientations, usually around 7:30. Doing a drive by is a great way to tell what a company is like if he does it at the right time. Use your noodle, in other words.

If I do that drive-by on an orientation Monday and see 100 new hires going into a 5000-truck outfit, it means I'll keep on driving and probably won't ever go back there. And I'm sure if I look over the heads of the new hires and into the lot, I'll then see all the cleaned-outs left by last week's quitters. I'm no fool. I WILL be looking. Be sure you look, too.

Anyone who doesn't take a company's lot into consideration when researching a company is begging for a let-down. That person is probably wearing an "I'm a sucker" ballcap to boot.

    Good luck, Flat.

I don't know about the other outfits you mentioned but I would definetly advise against TMC. They apparently have issues with pushing their drivers to violate HOS regs, which isn't surprising for any company that hauls building materials.

I've heard all about TMC's HOS violations. I also have info on all the other companies that I am searching into. I've read all the forums, time and time again, and I'm not going into the industry blind by any means. I am looking at a company that will fit me. I understand that they may not be for everyone, but they seam to suit me best with the guidelines that I set forth for myself. I also understand that "Most" drivers that end up knocking other companies have brought certain things on themselves. You have to work to get what you want, and I don't mind working... There is good, and bad with every company that you go too. You have to choose what fits you best and go from that point on and as long as you have done your homework, hopefully things work out for the best... I appreciate everyone's comments, and if anyone meets anyone on the road that might drive for Evans Equipment Co. Butler, In pm me or give them my info so that I can make a good sound judgement on this company... I'm in no hurry... I have time to wait.

    Thank's again

Evans in Butler, IN is a riff raff operation from the top down. I may post in detail at some point, but here I shall cut to the quik. Their DOT Rating is serious, they have a tremendous turn over, their equipment is trash (1,390,000 on the tractor they showed me), extremely filthy too. They monitor you literally minute by minute as the DOT is hot on them, and has been for quite sometime; I've never seen babysitting like this company does it. As I was leaving from orientation (before it was over) I felt such a relief. It was if I woke up and came to my senses, as if I had just climbed out of a hole I started digging the minute I walked in to check the place out. Fair warning boys and girls ... I almost forget to mention the 2 pages of fines you pay the company for various and sundry offences found only in company policy; including if you quit in the first 90 days ... fines and reimbursements follow. :tongue1:
