Makes me wonder how many vehicles are traveling on the roads today compared to say 1980....more vehicles, more congestion, more accidents maybe.

Yeppers. People see the raw numbers and see a for example 5% jump in wrecks and fatalities. All the while ignoring the 10% jump in miles traveled, which makes the rate go down.
Then they try and use the raw numbers as a reason whatever method failed (ELD, HOS, whatever) when the people making the law actually have studied this stuff a lot more than what people realize.

what about percentage of the fatalities due to the fact that more and more drivers are improperly trained today than decades ago? Need to take that into consideration as well.

201, Boondock, Last Call and 1 other person Thank this.

This is something that always used to bother me. The reason for HOS rules to start with was to actually protect OTR drivers. Back in those days driving a truck was actually physically demanding. No Air Conditioning running all day long. Then over time Unions got involved and finally, the HOS rules were adopted. Then as normal something setup to protect a driver is now used as a club against them.

Back in 2012, I could have driven from 7 AM till dark provided I got a good night's sleep. If I started driving at 7 AM (under the HOS rules in 2012) I had to stop driving after my daily limit was reached, yet that guy pulling a travel trailer with an F350 Pickup that started the same time I did can keep right on driving. That always did bother me. Oh well, I'm retired!

If you do that 100 state troopers will land on your truck by zip line within 3 seconds of being over the clock. Then they will zip tie your body to the bed and force feed you pilot chorizo tacos until you become sleepy. Two of them will lay on each side of you and force you to take selfies with them until they run out of phone battery. Then they will all get ready to leave within the last hour of your 10, but not until they’ve tattoed HOS on your outter butt cheek with an old chicken bone and the ink from the pen you were about to use on that FORBIDDEN paper log, be careful driver
