The scales on I 10 west in Anthony turns off the pre pass when it's late at night and they are bored. This is what the NM DOT officer in the little office in told the Frito Lay driver I dealt with when I did receiving at Walmart when he asked one night.

On my first day of driving, after the trainer drove for 4 hours, he got into the sleeper, while I drove the next 4 hours. I was on I 90 going from MN into SD. I had checked the MN map on my Truckers Road Atlas, and there was not scale shown on the entry into SD, so I was not looking for a scale. I was looking at all the signs about construction, and watching the speed limit waiting for it to drop from 60 mph down to 45 mph. A lot of signs and orange cones on the left side of the road, which I was watching. After a while I notice a trooper pulled in snug behind me, but he does not pull me over.....then his DOT buddy shows up and pulls me over.

The DOT guy comes to the door and tells me I didn't stop in the port of entry......I ask him, what is a port of entry....he says a scale....I say, sh&iiiiiiit, I missed a scale. I was pulling a tanker of milk, and was clearly not overweight, so he knew I wasn't dodging the scale. He wrote me a warning ticket and saved me $165 ticket.

I asked him how long that scale has been there, as it was not on my Truckers Atlas, he says about 20 years........so the atlas does not show scales for bordering states when you are looking at the atlas....you have to flip over to that state and check it out on that page. I really think Rand McNally should put a notice in the front of their atlas that they don't show scales on bordering states when using their atlas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'll admit it. I blew by a scale on eastbound I-90 in western Montana early this last week. Around midnight not too far from the Idaho border in HEAVY fog I could manage about 40 mph comfortably. Every now and then folks would go past me, apparently with either x-ray vision or part of the Russian Roulette Circuit, and I would speed up to try and keep their tail lights within view for a while.

Every now and then a bobtail logging truck would come on by and at one point three of them were in a convoy and I followed as best as I could. Pretty soon the last bobtail's tail lights started to fade off into the fog, when all of a sudden his left turn signal came on and he changed lanes into the left lane. I slowed, thinking maybe there was a big rig on the shoulder or some other vehicle in the right lane. But around that time there were street lamps that lit up enough of the road I could see far enough ahead I saw there weren't any obstacles.

Then I noticed all three bobtails taking an exit on the left. As I went by I saw the signs for the scale, the "Open" sign, and the active scale with trucks lined up to cross the scales.

    DOH!

I got into the left lane, hoping there would be enough room on the exit ramp to pull over and put on the 4-ways, but no such luck. The snow was packed close in to the exit lane, leaving no room. So I decided to continue on to the next exit and come back.

By the time the next exit came up I was so far ahead of the scale I figured they would have sent someone to get me by now. There wasn't any Prepass. Fuggedaboutit.

    Hammer down.
