I hit my first deer last night going westbound over Donner. Was going through that construction zone and the thing just runs right at me. Luckily it misses my tractor and goes underneath the trailer. My tandems bounce a little and that was that. Stopped at the break check area and all my air lines are still good, thank God.

I did that coming down i-81 in PA. Went right under the tandems at 65mph. It was disgusting ....

The deer I hit was standing in the lane that was closed down for construction and as I got close he goes right at me, maybe he was depressed.

I have had 5 collisions with deer over the years, BUT I always put on the report the deer HIT me, Don't blow the air horn, it just spooks them and they run in front of the truck.

I've gotten several deer but have been lucky with most. The worst was last Nov. I nailed a 6pt at 60 mph dead center in the grille, it took me a couple hundred yards to stop and thats when he fell off!:biggrin_2559: ( picture Wiley Coyote cartoon) Did $13,000 in damage:biggrin_2556: It was going to 3-4 weeks to fix So the co. gave me a brand spankin new truck and about 4 days later.... you guessed it I hit another! Not to bad this time (Bumper, hood, grille)

Always stop and check for damage!! When safe to do so. That 2nd accident if I hadn't stopped and looked I wouldn't have seen that round steel bumper reinforcement that was bent and loose and just waiting for a bump to dig into the right steer tire.

City folks! Get your rambo knife out and slit his throat! :biggrin_255:

Yeah, call 911. I watched a TN state trooper shoot one just as I passed. I got to go inside the next scalehouse and they were all talking about it. I told them I witnessed him killing Bambi. We also joked he needed to be cited for hunting without a license.

Listen to what Hvy said. ;)
Of course you need to inspect. They can do some major damage, take out a radiator, push a fender against a tire.....
Always hold your lane! A deer will change direction in a heartbeat. Swerving is just hurting you. Where there's one there's more behind.

Moose hits are less frequent because of location and they are very shy. But they are the #1 killer of drivers by animal strike. Like you said, the legs get clipped and the body comes through the windshield.

I see them in MS a lot because they like the rye grass by the highway. But I'd have to say PA has the largest population. Run I-80 in the fall and you'll see blood spatters everywhere. They even have a scooper they drive around to pick up carcasses. TN is right up there too.

A couple of years back in Delaware on Rt 41 a Pick up truck hit a deer, three people riding and the antler came through the windshield and impaled the lady sitting in the middle. Killed her.
