As for the motion sensors, I think it was the toll road in Indiana used to have them. Don't know if they where not effective, too expensive, or just a test, but they aren't there anymore.

I tend to see small animals or even deer right on the sholder, dead but not smushed. I know u can hit a deer maybe jumping but the small ones that are not flat, how's does that happen?
-
They may look " good " on the outside but they're busted up on the inside.
They usually don't get that " smushed " look til they've been run over a few times. -
6pt deer are small around here. Also seeing just 4 in a group is also small. A few weeks ago while driving home from the shop, I had 15 run in front of me, while the other 3 ran back off the right side of the road. They were not all 10-12 pts, or bucks, several were does. However they were not small, it seems that on average they would weigh between 180-250lbs. It's not uncommon for the larger deer to dress-out at 150 lbs. We have some big deer around here. For years they only issued deer permits to Kansas residents. Finally the state was convinced they needed to open this up to out of state hunters. The property damage caused to farm fields and vehicles was staggering due to the over-population.
While yes they like grass, they really love grains. So if you have some sort of grain field like wheat or milo along a roadway, and some tree line or other heavier cover, you can expect deer to be thick in those areas. So far I've not hit one in my big truck (knocking on wood). I've had a very small one run into the side of my pickup, just a month after I bought it. Then years ago, as a LEO, while responding to an emergency call, I had a large buck run into the right rear quarter-panel of my cruiser. I was traveling at 105 mph at the time. Sounded like it caved in the entire rear of my car. However the only evidence was a small scratch about 10" long with some blood and fur. I guess since I was moving so fast it just glanced off, thank God!! There were no shoulders, just steep ditches that were lined with trees. Would not have been very pretty had I gone off the road. -
One guy ran up to my brothers car and he thought he was going to ask him if he was alright. Nope! He asked him if he could have the deer.
He stays busy during deer season.
I remember when I was a kid up in PA. My dad shot a deer and he had a VW bug. All I remember is he tied the legs to both bumpers and the head was hanging over the windshield. That was a big deer. A buck up north might get close to 7' with a full rack. Down here maybe 6' with a rack. The deer in FL might go 3'. -
West Virginia has the most deer roadkill according to this site: http://paul.kedrosky.com/archives/2009/09/diversions_deer.html
And, yes, My husband and I have both hit deer...but not with the truck. I hit one last year with a Hyundai Accent and he hit one several years ago with a minivan...his was a stereotypical "deer-in-the-headlight". Just as he rounded a curve a deer stuck his/her head into the narrow road and right into the headlight of the vehicle. Only damage to his vehicle was the headlight...to mine, the hood.
Don't worry, Newnashguy, your time is coming when you, too, will join the ranks of vehicular deer-killers. Especially if you drive ANYTHING for a living. -
Never hit one in any vehicle, but came very close twice on a motorcycle. The second time I ended up in a corn field to dodge it in the middle of a turn.

I think Michigan is the most deer populated state.Stupid deer, and those deer horns don't work. That's just a cheap piece of plastic.

NewNashGuy Thanks this.
