Wait, I can still get up and go get food from fridge going down road. As long as iI use my Bluetooth to tell my wife hold on. I can handle that. Now that's done let's address 4 wheelers doing makeup,Fighting with kids in back seat, Texting, Using computers. Oh that goes for cops too. Can't count how many LEO seen typing on CPU as they talk on phone passing me at 80 mph

You are correct most folks can't see the forest for the trees.
Only a money making tool nothing else.
Do I feel safer NO! Why not? In five years I have had many level one inspections and only ONE found I had hydraulic brakes without my help.
So if they are not doing their job before hand how is another rule going to help?? CSA is a crock of ###### only meant to drive more usless rules.
Ant to top it off there is no uniform rules cause the goverenment lets states
do them the way they see fit till they get caught doing it wrong.
Then when you complain they send it back to the states to review?
CSA, FMSCA,DOT and all other programs that fall under this unbrella are all
self-fallating on our dollars.

I think you're missing the point.

Those who break the law are going to CONTINUE to break the law, REGARDLESS of the potential consequences, including hefty fines. That's a fact.

I also already stated that, depending on the situation, it is safer to have a hands-free device. That is also a fact.

I don't want to get totally 'down in the weeds' and go on a case-by-case basis of when it is appropriate to use a hands-free device and when it is not, but here are two quick examples:

1. Late spring, midday, dry road with good lighting conditions, light to no traffic, on a four-lane divided interstate with miles of straight road in front of you.

2. I-287 southbound in New Jersey prior to the I-78 interchange when you want to hop on I-78 westbound, in January, on a Friday night at 6:00 PM, 37 degrees with light rain.

In both situations, the vehicle being driven doesn't have any mechanical anomalies, no outsize or oversize cargo that requires special consideration in driving technique, and you are well rested and alert.

In the first example, even if I totally screw the pooch, drive the truck off the side of the road, and kill myself in my attempts to fumble with a cell phone, I'm not taking anyone else with me.

In the second, the exit lane to get on I-78W gets totally backed up, the weather is bad, it's dark, and I am doing all I can to safely guide the truck without hitting a crazy four-wheeler or putting myself in the ditch. In this case, even WITH a hands-free device, I know my limitations and I'm not going to dial OR answer a call.

In the first example, do I need a law that forces me to purchase and utilize a hands-free device if I would happen to be the only one to suffer the consequences should I lose control of the vehicle?

In the second example, do I need a law to tell me that I shouldn't answer that phone call, or make one? Better get on the horn with your congressional representative. He/she will thank you for coming up with such a fantastic way to 'enhance public safety', which is polidick talk for 'raising revenue through regulation'.

You can't regulate to the lowest common denominator. See above: stupid people will disregard the law and use a phone without a hands-free device, regardless.

How did we ever talk on the C.B. all these years while jammin' gears, switching lanes, and checking out the legs on the chick with the top down in the convertible next to you without wiping out busloads of nuns and school kids? Better get on the horn again to your representative, who will impose his/her will on you and me with some more regulation ($$$$$$$).

With respect to this law, I MIGHT have gotten on board had the rationale been that the fine would be issued should an accident OCCUR as a direct result of not utilizing a hands-free device, in addition to other applicable fines that are already on the books, IF THE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE WAS AT FAULT.

Why aren't the same laws and fines being levied against four-wheelers? How many Jersey State Troopers have I seen in the hammer lane doing Mach Snot without their disco lights on, talking on a cell phone while punching something into the computer? It's okay for THEM, but not for US?

As far as your personal note to me, I think I pretty much covered that in my two examples. As Dirty Harry said, "A man's got to know his limitations." I know mine. I am human, am not perfect, and can make mistakes. Having said that, I am conservative when I am multitasking. I don't care if you take your eyes off the road to look at a GPS, change the station on your radio, pull the sunvisor down - if you do anything other than keep your hands on wheel and your eyes on the road, you're multitasking.

You mean to tell me you've never done any of those things?

The REAL reason for these laws are public perception that their elected officials are 'doing something' and for revenue production.

Once you "indulge" you can not pick and choose when and where to be impaired. You either are, or you aren't. --You can't just shut if off.

You can CHOOSE when and where to make a phone call. If conditions dictate it is not safe to make a phone call... Then don't make one!

Apparently, hands free devices will NOT make us any SAFER. So how exactly is this new hands-free law anything more then a "feel good" law?

And as for the other stats, Are they saying phones CAUSE accidents? If somebody runs a red light and plows into me while I'm on the phone, I have no doubt it ends up on a statistic somewhere that I was on the phone, and involved in an accident.

NEWS FLASH! 7 out of 10 drivers involved in accidents had the radio on!!!

actually, I don't know how many had the radio on. But surely car radios have been the cause of accidents. And I bet a HUGE percentage of accidents involve vehicles where the radio was in fact on. But what is the real correlation between radio use, and accident cause?

Wow I didnt know where to report this but I was turning right today had my signal light on and everything and this freaking lady truns right by me narrowly missing me and cuts me off I looked over and of course she was on her #### cellphone!! UTAH LAWMAKERS PASS A LAW TO GET PEOPLE OFF THEIR #### PHONES!!! I see distracted drivers all the time becuse of that crap. Im tired of it people should be more responsible and not talk on their #### cell phones without bluetooths or at least wired headsets!!!! GET A CLUE UTAH PUBLIC!! (I'm not professing to be a perfect driver but least I dont do that crap)

I've had a hands free head set for some time now. I feel I'm much less distracted using it than holding my cell phone up to my ear. I don't need some dip $h!t law to tell me this though. To many laws and not enough common sense. Lahood and others will be always making some law to keep themselves work. Job security.

Well next time the CSA/DOT decides to ram laws down our throat and we dont like it, will you write and get involved or will you belly ache like a CB kung ## master, the Politicians dont know what we think they dont read these forums, but they do listen if you call or write, and I write often, Ive added the Phone numbers of my Representatives into my phone and when I see CRAP they get a call.

My solution although I highly dbout I'll ever get busted for talking on the phone in a regional dump truck, but with this I can watch movies while driving! Now that's not a distraction at all!
