Just run a good size filter filter on the hose than. I stole mine from a parts motorcycle that was around. Old trucks had filters on the compressors picking up outside air so its nothing new. Try it and see. If the compressor needs the air under pressure from the engine it'll let you know by not building air pressure normally. Just try it in your driveway before you take off on some trip. If it seems to work normally try it out and see if your oil issue gets any better.
Excessive oil passing into air tanks and purging out air dyer, HELP!

Yes, you can run a small filter on that black hose. Where it is disconnected from the engine, you will have to block that fitting at the engine. The oil drain is inside the bottom of the compressor housing where it bolts to the back of the front cover and oil just flows by gravity into the back of the front cover. You would have to remove the air compressor to inspect this.

here is how i hooked it up. do you think this will work? Did i do anything wrong? I blocked off the air intake at the manifold with a rubber/plastic cap and a metal clamp (all hardware stores did not carry either a bolt or plug 3/4 fine thread...) I bought a screw in exhaust off of a lawn motor and stuffed in a air filter and drilled out the middle. If i put my hand over it i can feel the suction. My fears are the air filter gets sucked right into the air compressors intake and that the rubber cap melts down (no idea how hot that intake gets)

so am i ok or not? I'm not a mechanic and not sure if my fix is suffice to leave saturday for a 3,000 mile run

Under high boost I think that grey cap will blow off at the intake manifold. The air filter for the compressor looks ok.
SAR Thanks this. -
Honestly, sometimes stock or factory is the way to go..
I would of just got some bigger fittings on both ends and went up to a #10 or #12 hose.
Then your not screwing around with filters and stuff -
If there is a screen under that filter element you made up it should be ok. That cap could be iffy. That fitting in the manifold should be pipe thread too l think. If you take that 45 degree fitting right out you should be able to get a plug at any parts/plumbing place. I eould definitely take it for a half hour or so drive first to try it out before going on a 3000 mile trip!

ya i took it out and brought to the hardware store and went to all the plumbing and hardware section. Its 3/4" fine thread... they carry EVERYTHING but that. I could also attach the hose and put a ugly screw in the end to cap it... just want something more visually appealing and permanent.

so the cap held, and the filter never got sucked into the air compressor motor. However none of those changes fixed anything. I'm back to square one, it is burning, leaking, or purging as much oil as ever. Oil comes out the blowby still and dumps out of the air tanks when it sits for a while. Any other advice regarding the air compressor as to what can possibly be causing this? Is it coming out the rings on the engine? I have zero leaks, and no smoke out the tail pipe... so i'm mystified

I would start with a new air compressor.
Any way you look at it, yours is passing oil. New or not. It's no good.
Start with that and go from there.
Change your air dryer cartridge same time
