Let me begin by letting everyone know, up front, that I am not a driver. However, I am moving in that direction. I have been researching options, and requirements for several weeks, and decided to start with Maverick. I hope that they work out for me as they appear to have everything that I am looking for. I made the phone call, and a packet is on the way. I was told that I probably would not make the next class in August, but that if they receive my information within the next two weeks I would most likely make the September, or October class. I am excited, but I am also nervous. I am 33, and I only have one speeding ticket which is almost sixteen years old. Other than that one speeding ticket I have never done anything to draw the attention of law enforcement. I have no health issues other than my weight, and I have been employed by my current employer for ten years this month. I have also been an interim pastor for two small, rural churches for the past four years. Do I need to worry about anything else?

    Thank You,

    -Robert

    Nope.

Except the being a pastor part. You are likely to end up cussing a lot more and will occasionally take the Lord's name in vain in traffic. Trucking will test your spiritual condition!

Haha no man you will be fine. Will tell you this. When I started out trucking I was 210 lbs and within 3 years I went up to 250. Finally back to 230 but has taken much more time than imagined. Every truck stop has a subway, McDonalds, or Wendys.

@DrivenCuriosity - How overweight are you? If you do flatbed, you'll likely shed a good bit of that, but you'll need to be able to climb onto a trailer and possibly onto a load for securement and tarping purposes.

With some companies, if your neck size is over 18", they may put you through their Sleep Apnea testing but from what Ive heard, its not really that big of a deal. The ticket shouldn't bother you at all being that old. Sounds like you'll be fine? Good luck!

I didn't cuss or take the Lords name in vain. Traffic is traffic. I served as a interim pastor also but after that I moved on to Evangalism and took a break to drive. Did that well over a year and back to my Ministry now.

Trucking is great training to be a fire and brimstone preacher.

lol Reminds me of a joke my uncle (an old trucker himself) used to tell me.

Q: In what way is a Trucking occupation similar to a Preaching Occupation?

A: A Preacher goes around Preaching the Hell out of you, a Trucker goes around Scaring the Hell out of you.

Since you gave a few months before you get into it you have time to work on the weight. The DOT physicals are really cracking down on heavyset drivers. Try a ketogenic diet. The fact you have been with the same employer for ten years is a huge plus for you. It will make it very easy to fill out applications at trucking companies and you'll present as an excellent candidate.
