Exercise and eating on the road!

    Can anyone give examples of how they keep in shape and eat healthy on the road. I will be driving for SWIFT, hopefully, so I won't have my own truck.

    Any examples of workouts, exercise equipment,food or any other healthy life style suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Walmarts are usually pretty accessible in a semi. Pull in and hit the produce section and stock up your truck. Stay out of the truckstops. This will also save you some money. I bought a set of the bowflex dumbells(select tecks) and a cheap collapsable workout bench to carry in the truck. One other a thing, a good pair of tennis shoes for walking or jogging.

    In 2000, I lost 150 lbs while driving a truck. I carried a bicycle with me, which provided excellent cardio exercise (providing the weather was at least halfway decent), and I had a set of rubber band exercisers for use in the sleeper.
    In a side box, I had a set of 'bells, which I used while unloading (pneumatic tanker), and I also used the truck as a prop for various angle push-ups and stuff.

    I started eating more often, with smaller quantities. I cut out the soda and went
    to unsweet tea and water, in addition to one orange juice a day. I also saved a lot
    of money not eating in truckstop restaurants, as I carried canned soups and healthy snack food. The soup was cooked either on a Sterno stove, or I would lay it on the defroster vents with the heat turned all the way up. After about an hour, the soup was fairly hot, and definitely fine for eating. That Mack could put out the heat, lemme tell ya.

    I think the most fun part, and the secret for me, was the bicycle. I started with a crap-store Huffy, and eventually got to the point where I enjoyed riding it in nearly all weather. When stuck for a weekend in a small scenic town like Georgetown, SC (mentioned in another thread), it was the perfect mode of transportation. Keep it fun, make it something you really WANT to do, rather than something you have to force.

    I went on to ride with a bunch of racers, and completed several Century rides (100 miles), including the Hotter'n Hell 100.

    I don't have any good 'Before' pics, as I was pretty camera shy. Below is my 'after', taken near the end of my first Arkie 100.

    That's the key! Make it fun and make it a challenge. Give yourself something to look forward to besides eating and sitting around!

    150 pound weight loss while being a trucker? That should be pretty inspirational to many, Spacer. I know I'm impressed!

    Literally. After a couple moves, a change of lifestyle that took me away from bike commuting, and a painful bout with Rheumatoid Arthritis, I've gained a lot of it back.
    I'm feeling a bit better, but now I need to get back on the road to where I need to be.


    I guess it'd be a good time to take a 'before' pic.... :biggrin_25511:

    Well you did it once you can do it again. Good luck, sorry to hear about the Arthritis...I heard you can control that somewhat with diet. :biggrin_25520:

    This is from one of my post from a few weeks back!

    These are a lot of exercises you can do with a band... I use the 3 band ones from Gold's Gym sold at Wal-Mart for under $15... They are cool cause you can adjust the tension by simply removing or adding a band!
    Plus they give you almost the same feeling as free weights!
    Note you will also need a long (standard) band!

    As far as diet goes, try and stay between 1200 and 1500 calories a day and you will be fine!

    That is awesome. I will be joining the ranks as a driver in January, and I am concerned about eating healthly, as well. That is off the charts to lose more that 150 ibs while driving.
