Yea I am having a similar issue with my Series 60 Detroit. The bad thing is I have yet to find soot anywhere. I am about to start at the front at the manifold and go all the way to the back replacing everything that hasnt been replaced. In the meantime one thing that I have found that helps is turning my vents onto RECIRC instead of bringing in fresh air. And opening a window or two.
Exhaust smell in cabin while idling, any ideas?

As far as the turbo whistle like everyone else said check the flex pipe/ gaskets
Good luck -
Until you find the leak and fix it, stop in a Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot.... buy a smoke/Carbon monoxide detector/alarm to wake you up if the smoke concentration goes dangerously high while sleeping; I saw drivers pulled out dead from trucks with this kind of problems parked overnight idling. Imop any truck with sleeper should have a good fire/smoke/carbon monoxide detector, especially with this new emission chocked motors.

If the flex pipe is leaking you can wrap it with heat tape and stop the fumes, short term fix only.

I have the same problem with the same truck. I checked everything, couldn't find any leaks. Might be the ruber hose under the engine that looks like exhaust and small amount of fumes is getting out of it. I've seen this only on volvo engines. After i used 3 times in a row injector cleaner, looks like the smell is gone, but i might just got used with it, i dont know. I've had this problem before and it was the flex pipe, but now looks ok.
The carbone monoxite alarm is a great idea btw, i didnt had one before and i almost poisoned myself one night. -
Check if the clamp is leaking between the turbo and the turbo pipe also the easy way to find the leak is to take soap spray that u use to find air leaks and when the engine is cold spray whatever u can reach and have someone stay In the can start it and rev it up a few times u should be able to see bubbles coming out I've done it a few times and it has worked very well

I just had the exhaust pipe, rear of the flex pipe and leading to the muffler, pulled and welded as a hole had come about underneath the u-bolt holding said pipe onto the truck.
