I have been in and out of two shops, no one can find a leak, but I still smell it every time I Idle and turn on the forward HVAC! Now, from what I hear here, I have a problem that cannot be found or fixed and will get me fined or put out of service?! What the hell can I do?

Someone on the CB said it coulda been like that for so long that my system is coated with exhaust residue, and that is the continuing smell?? That sound right to anyone? Not to me, cause when I'm sitting still it still smells like fresh exhaust shooting into my face,

Again, check the pipe behind/under the U-bolts holding the pipe to the truck. It is an area very often overlooked because theoretically there shouldn't be a leak there. I had two leaks under two u-bolts. PC-7 glue will work real well if that's the case. Mine were actually welded/brazed but the glue trick will work.

I had this issue post EGR valve #2 being replaced. I got the smell and increased noise fom the turbo and exhaust brake. I also have the same engine. It turned out to be the the clamp between the exhaust manifold and #2 EGR intake. Check that all four clamps are tight on the EGR valves. You will need to remove the air filter plumbing and the heat shield to access all four clamps.

I had the same problem. Check all the connections on the exhaust but if you want something else, replace the three piece manifold with a one piece from Volvo. Best thing you'll do I gaurantee it. I have no fumes now.

I actually finally got it fixed right last week. It was the manifold gaskets again. Third time, they got it right. They said one bolt kept coming loose. They- Volvo in little rock, drilled out the old threads and put new ones in. Manifolds are in good shape. No more whistling noise when the turbo, Jake, or exhaust pressure governor kick in and no more fumes! I can breathe!:biggrin_25520:

Good for you. It's so much nicer when the smell is gone.

Just had my exhaust manifold gaskets replaced by TEC in Portland OR. Now finally I have no more smell or funny noises.

Okay guys, time to resurect this thread,

So after many years of running as a CO. Driver and a Lease Driver I finally bit the bullet and bought my own truck...

I just bought a 2007 780 with the D16 (980K mi., 18spd, 535 hp, 2050tq, rebuilt tranny 75K ago, Owner had all PAPERS to confirm) got it for a screaming deal 10k with a BRAND NEW Crate motor from Volvo---NOTHING off the old motor was used on the new one... (thanks to them leaving the drain plug out after a service) ----Volvo in Hermiston, Oregon BTW---

Anyways, Im now the 2nd owner (original owner decided to retire while volvo was installing new motor) heres my issue and I hope someone can help me figure this out...

I also have a strong and I mean STRONG exhaust smell coming from the FRONT HVAC when Idling the truck, (and only the front and before you say it yes, I know that the rear HVAC pulls air from the sleeper) when rolling its not there, when on setting for recirc is on, its not there... Im stuck between (from what I saw on this thread)

Exhaust manifold gaskets (all are new and shiny, absolutely no signs of exhaust leaks on any of them, Nor at the turbo flange -manifold to turbo side- )

Or the Flex pipe coming off the HOT side of the turbo.....

ORRRRRR hopefully the cheaper way is an exhaust saturated front cabin air filter (as the original owner had it at Volvo for new exhaust manifold seals -as they were leaking- and a full service (and we already know what happened with the service)

Im wondering what I can do to "test" for an exhaust leak myself at the exhaust manifold gaskets or anywhere else to see if there is a leak, Id love to drop it off at the dealer (due to new motor it has a 1 million mile motor warranty) but as I just spent my entire savings buying this truck I cant afford the down time.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated... I sometimes take the family (wife 32 and the kids 7,4, and 2) with me and I want to make sure this is NOT an issue before I take them again (1.5 hours home when I bought the truck)

    The Gunny
