I recently purchased the Garmin 465T gps and have been using it for a couple of weeks. I have found it to be pretty accurate but do have some complaints and am wondering if the Rand McNally TND500 would be better since they keep updating.
It figures that in these past couple weeks I have been doing the same route to Chicago and back to Detroit and have not really needed it but thought I would use it to test it out and see how its routes differed from the route that I know is trusted and proven.

Initial calculation of route= ok but I know of better ones.
Re-route capabilities= terrible (got off at truckstop to use restroom and it wanted to re-route me thru a bunch of side roads and towns rather than put me back on the entance ramp to the freeway I was using when I got off that was 50 yards away)
Weigh station alerts= so-so. Worked but was about 3-5 miles off at times.
Sharp curve warning= poor ( changed locations everytime I made the trip)

These are just a couple of things that ended up irritating me but all in all it did an alright job but for $499 it should be better I feel. I know the gps cannot be trusted 100% but am wondering if the RM TND500 would be a better choice since I see they keep updating and keeping up on it.

    Baack Thanks this.

I personally have the RM TND500 and I had the Garmin 465 previously. I would have to say hands down that in my experiences so far the RM unit blows the Garmin away. Don't get me wrong Garmin has its strong points, but there are so many features RM has over it.

Please check out the thread on RM on this forum, lots of good info there. I am very happy with mine and they are constantly updating the units (free of charge as of now) and taking input from customers and correcting things to make it even better.

Talk to Mark on the other thread.......he is very knowledgeable on RM unit.

    Good Luck!

I have a Garmin unit from several years ago. A street pilot. The unit has worked well for me over the years. The map updates seemed a bit expensive for what it actually updated.

When the 465T was announced I was looking forward to its release. The price was a bit of a problem for me, thats a lot of money for a GPS.

I did get hold of a Goodyear branded unit, the GY500X. The unit has a few things that are good. The thing is built like a tank, very rugged case, the mount is good and the 12V plug is solid. It does come with an external antenna as well. Thats about all the good I can say about it. Very difficult to use and set up. The manual, if you could call it that, is a joke. Just did not perform as advertised. Not sure why, but it always wanted to send me to North Carolina for all the POIs. The unit was returned in short order.

I know a few people with the 465T, and talked to some others that had one. They all seemed to have problems with the units. Data errors mostly. Routes seemed to be off a few miles and somewhat less than the optimum.

I had been hearing rumors of a Rand McNally unit and had been watching for some news, then I started seeing advertisements for it.

I purchased one back in October. It has not performed well and seems to have a problem. I don't know if it is just this unit or if others are having like problems.

A potential solution to the problems I have been having are in the works. It may take a few weeks to see if this works. I hope so, the unit is not cheap.

Based on my experience with the unit so far, I can not recommend purchasing one right now.
That may change in the near future.

If they can get the bugs worked out, it has potential.

have you contacted Garmin about the problems? I know there have been some updates recently for most of the units. I have a Nuvi 780 that I use in the truck in conjunction with my Motor Carriers and I've had to download updates for it twice this year. Keep in mind the 465 is a new unit, there is a learning curve to it and the only way Garmin will fix problems is if they are aware of it. The exit ramp problem I think is very common with all GPS units so I normally don't worry about it.

I just got my Garmin this week 465T

Is there any way to increase the notification distance for scales? At this point its only 4-5 miles. this is a bit short if I need to get off a exit ramp

    Thanks
