I am a city driver. I usually clear anywhere from 600-800 a week after taxes(NY wages). Get the endorsement but you wont expect to pull doubles or triples for city p/d. But get used to driving a straight truck using a lift gate and doing residentials, along with businesses. For what ever reason they wont get pup trailers with lift gates and just put it on straight trucks, so as a trailer driver u will do maybe 5 stops and on a straight truck u will do 10-14. They de-palletize everything just to fit it all on it. That drives me nuts as it an damage freight. Used to have a nice tractor but they took it away and put me in a straight truck which agitates me because of the senoir guys complaining... Can be a good job but I have had to greive so much since getting into the union... The straight job they gave me has holes in the floor and needs starting fluid to start and wont fix it...

    Countyboy Thanks this.

I think I'm done with USF Reddaway. Have been looking around and found a good dedicated job all drop n hook. It's teams which is a draw back. It is only 5 days out and 2 days off. Pays 1200 week gross to start. I'm sick of waiting by the phone and not knowing if I will work or not. Then there is that threat of being laid off which they are always throwing in our face. I'm done listening to the bs here and I'm not making that much anyway. I definitely don't make a consistent 1200 per week. I miss driving through the country too. Need some time away from the wife too.

No straight truck at the barn near the house, I used the term "city" loosely. I think the biggest city, white river junction, vt is about 1 hr away and less then 30,000 people live there. After reading alot of the comments of others It seems big issue is waiting for a call to go in to work which is not a big deal since its a 5 min walk, layoffs aren't huge since I've got 2 other back up local gigs, and pay sounds decent. Im used to using lift gates, fork lifts, and breaking stuff down off skids so that should be fine. I'll go get my dbl/trpl endorsement next time home I suppose just incase and if I need to run them I'm sure it's easier then pulling double hay trailers (for those from the city imagine doubles where all axles pivot/turn). Thanks for all the info, I apprieciate it.

Gosh you guys, I'm sorry to see you aren't having the same experience I am. I guess it depends on where you are located. I think Indy is a good location because I get ran on the North lane (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo), which, I heard, is the best lane, AND I get ran on the South lane (Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, Harrisburg, Atlanta). They keep me VERY busy. I run hard for 2 weeks, then, take 2 days off. Seems I work harder than most (by choice), but, I figure, since I'm new, and really gung-ho, and the work is plentiful now, I might as well run hard. Right? Anywho, I'm freakin lovin this job. Sorry for sounding like a broken record. lol

YRC for two concessions, pay verily nothing in the pension, sold off many of they're terminals and they still can't make profit. I'd stay away from them.

Must be nice not having any straight trucks. All we need is 4 not 9! Just have them do the residentials and the places that request them No need to pile up 14 stops and de-palletize all the freight to fit it in it. I had to file a grievance report today for not fixing a truck, they shop steward put his foot down on that and was mad. GRanted the inbound supervisor did tell me he wasnt aware of it being written up as the night supervisor is supposed to tell him. Could he be playing dumb, its possible but hes never given me a problem and if I have a request hes always willing to help out and fix something.

City driver is just another name for local p/d driver. Doubles arent to bad to pull just need to respect them and double/triple check EVERYTHING. They turn easier than a 53 footer. Also as a city driver you will most likely not sit by the phone waiting. I was given the 8am start time for the union shape. The shop steward comes in and gives you time cards, if you get the card you work, if you dont you got home. BUT if you beat a senoir guy there and hes late, you get to work and he goes home. I took a 9am start time, although I will lose some overtime I am guaranteed the days work plus I can sleep late

Squonk you seem to have it good. My friend is a road driver in Maybrook, NY, old co-worker from CWF. HE loves it as much as you do, hes been doing it a little longer too. But he is your age, kids out of the house, and it gets him away from his wife a few days a week so guess thats good. Hes also making a lot of money, I would go up there but its over a hour away from my house

Cool 35 I hear you on that. Good luck with the new gig if you get it. Hope you still keep in touch. ANd yes I hated waiting by the phone for CWF so I wouldnt want to deal with it here either, glad I am at a start 8am time. NExt two weeks Im doing the 9am which I lose overtime but am guaranteed the days work, nobody else wants it so being the bottom list guy I take it(Guy below me isnt sworn in yet)

Of course YRC is making a profit or else we would be out of a job. They just say they aren't so will won't try to get more money out of them. I can't say Reddaway is a bad job cause it isn't. It's a really good job. I just don't like waiting to get a bid run and that will be a long time. The other thing I don't like is waiting by the phone to see if I'm gonna work. When they talk about how we will one day have to pay for our benefits or lay offs, I could really care less. I just expect the worst and hope for the best. I am always making sure there are other options should that happen. In fact benefits are one of the reasons I'm leaving. Open enrollment for my wife's benefits is in October so we will just jump back on hers. Didn't cost that much anyway and she has really good benefits. That way I won't have to pay when I get this new job. Another big issue is trucking for me has always been about seeing the country and I miss it. Guess it's just in my blood.

YRC making a profit? What was operating ratio? Last I checked, YRC is losing 5cents of every dollar they bring in. That's not a profit.
