This is a fairly new requirement. Supposedly you give your medical info to your state, then you no longer have to carry your card with you. The rollout was botched by some states, so you still have to carry it. The upside (not)? When you get a new physical, and your old one hasn't expired, the examiner has faxed an illegible copy to your state, then you have to provide them a legible copy before they downgrade your license, even though the one they had on file was still valid.
Expired medical card

I have to do it every time I get a DOT physical.
-
I didn't drive from 2014 til last September. Self certified "Exempt Interstate", but could have did "Excepted Intrastate". Kept my CDL. When I went back to work, I got a physical and self certified as an interstate driver and I was good to go.

Depends on how you do it
My Doc does my DOT Physical as part of my yearly well exam, they don’t list it with Insurance as DOT EXAM but as wellness check up, i only have a yearly card though -
Self-certify with the state that you use your CDL in an operation that doesn't require you to keep a current medical exam.
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T USE YOUR CDL IN AN OPERATION THAT REQUIRES A CURRENT MEDICAL EXAM. Just do an internet search for "your state CDL self-certify form" and then read through the 4 options and see if one of them doesn't require a current medical exam. Or just get a current DOT medical exam and self-certify with the state.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
