A francis is a continuous load attenna not a top load. Compared to a base loaded attenna, center loaded, or top loaded I dont really know how it matches up ,good or bad. I do know that over the last 20 years I have used a Francis on several applications and always thought that they worked pretty well, especially the 5.5 ft on a mirror mount. Recently have read, and been told, that since Francis are now made by Barjan ( like wilson and Road King) that the quality is not as good as previous versions and that they dont perform as well, but I dont know if there is any truth to that. If you already have one and are getting a good swr go ahead and give it a try and find out for yourself, however they are only rated at 150 watts maximum so I dont know what that means with your Galaxy 98, it may present a problem( less than optimum output) or it may not, I once heard that too much power could melt the attenna if it didnt have a high enough wattage rating, but I guess I would have to see that to believe it.

The Francis attenna is not top loaded it is continous load and how that compares to a center load or top load in performance, good or bad I dont really know. I do know that over that last 20 years I have used the Francis attenna on several different applications with very good success, most the time 5.5ft on a mirror mount. Usually the swr is good (1.5 or less) right out of the package, only possible downside is that they are not very broad banded but I stay on 19 most the time. I have read that the Francis is not as good and same quality as previous ones because they are now made by Barjan ( like wilson and road king) but I dont know if there is any truth to this or not. If you already have one mounted on your truck go ahead and use it for a while and see if your satisfied with it, however dont know how it will do with Galaxy 98 because it is only rated at 150 watts.

I've heard a lot of people complaining of the Wilson brand having gone down hill since production went to China as well. But I don't know of its based on fact. I bought the Francis as a replacement for the beat up stock antenna that was making my cobra show antenna warnings. I'm currently looking for one for the galaxy and think I'm going to try the 5 ft firestik. I'm going to a shop tomorrow, he has an analyzer and is also going to put the galaxy in the bench to check things out.

As I mentioned the other day I think a top loaded fiberglass( Firestick or Wilson) would be an excellent choice

The Francis antenna that they currently manufacture performs just fine but where the fiberglass used to be swaged into the ferrule, the new manufacturer has chosen a cheaper route of assembly by using epoxy to hold it in and it will no longer hold together as well as the original model because the vibration causes the epoxy to crack and fall apart

Don't forget the SkipShooter for a top loaded fiberglass antenna, MADE IN THE USA. And easy to tune if needed also.

Actually it is a helical wound antenna with an adjustable tip.

It works well, I've got several of them in storage that I used.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but there is more wire at the top, i.e. more tightly wound at the top, than the rest of the shaft. Is that not a top loaded antenna?
