They actually didn't. They checked my current antenna setup outside when I first got there and all was well. Then they had me pull in to the bay for the power wire install. In the bay they put their 6 ft 'test firestik' on and checked the swr while still inside the bay and said swr was too high and I should stick with the francis... at that point I said nevermind, paid for the labor and left.

Well by they I mean the install tech. I don't know anything about how the owner tunes radios.
-
So have you been using the 98vhp?
-
No I'm back to the Cobra. Hardrive was pretty specific about disconnecting the 98 until he can work on it.

I just did some measuring today on my original Wilson 1000. It was the shortest shaft (4") but I have the stiff spring which is about 3 to 4". The coil sits around even with the cab and the stinger from the ground up measures about 13' 4". I do flats so need to clear the box van. From what been reading here, now I want to get a longer shaft so the coil would be above the aluminum top cab. My SWR when I had this stinger put up was well under the 1.5. I just remember the tech saying it was set better then what his has seen in a while. So I'm thinking about see if I can find a longer shaft on Amazon or who knows where. But it seems this will end up messing with my SWR and will need to recalibrate. You can the antenna in my avatar. Thoughts ........

Very informative thread, thanks to all contributors!!

Evvy, you going to use Francis with the 98vhp or do you have another attenna in mind.
-
The francis would melt, lol. On our phone conversation hardrive recommended the predator 10k - I'm assuming the shorter, dual coil one but he said he'd elaborate more on that after the tune. I'm not a fan of the big gaudy antennas but I'm going to put that aside and go with his knowledge on the matter.
