Anyone running those plate mounted transponders? Just mailed an app to ny ezpass for two of them. Have always run an interior mount...realized recently that I hadn't been getting any discount from cash price for any port authority tolls, and was regularly paying near $100 for going 1 exit down the thruway (starting at Newburgh and going south...
apparently they weren't checking plate records where I got on & charging full thruway $)
I have always had my transponder from NJ. Going thru ny this time see if they hook me up a little more on the rates. And wanting the plate mount so I have no further issues with being wildly overcharged.
Any info on plate mounted transponders?

I'm looking to hear: how often do you have a missed reading; anything special I should know (wipe it off when it's dirty?) etc
-
so your inside unit wasn't reading? probably a bit to high, they charge from farthest point when it doesn't read, the sign will let you know it read it or not, if not [ull over get it corrected right then.

It wasn't reading on the "high speed lane" @ 84/87 interchange. $88.xx per occurrence. And I go that way a lot. There's no sign on the high speed lanes.

I have the inside type in my personal SUV, one time it was on the dash and did not work when the trooper came over said it was too low?? How is that as my dash is higher than most cars if mounted to the top of the front glass! So I say height has nothing to do with it not working.
I have seen the black bar type on front plates on cars in the train parking lot but dont know if they work any better or get discounts if used. Also if height has anything to do about it why is the bar type even lower than the inside ones?
How old is the one you have? We, wife has one too, had to get them replaced after a bit. Seams the batt or whatever powers it runs low and they dont work as good as when new. Maybe yours needs replacing?
I have gone thru the high speed ones also with no issues. I also MAKE SURE I DO THE SPEED LIMIT when I go thru. We have a low speed, 15 MPH, one close and we have been caught a few times going too fast, taken away for a month once, so I make sure I am at or below the speed limit when I go thru any non-stop EZ-PASS lanes.

Um, I have personal experience with that high speed interchange as well. Something's not right, and if you don't have a NY EZpass, they won't run or can't run your tag. My Ipass recently died. Didn't find out until I jumped on and off the Thruway. I now have the newer style skinny rectangle Ipass. I've been thinking about switching to Bestpass so I can get all the discounts.

Ruthless Thanks this. -
Well for commercial applications they recommend an exterior transponder if you have a flat windshield ( I do) be also if you have any kind of metal visor (again, I do) yet and still it picks up and reads @ 90% of booths without a problem. I've had this unit bout 5 years. Doesn't seem like its a powered unit: not sure how it does work tho. Oh well. Guess I'll find out if the plate mount does better. -
I always had NY EZ Pass in the FLD I stick it on bottom right corner of left windshield. Have oversize SS visor, never any reading problems. Only trouble I had was early on if I changed plates they'd redlight me and I had to give my new plate number but you can do that on their website now.
They mail me a new one every few years. Once I got charged for a bunch of tolls on the NJTpk when I mailed my old one back. It was reading from inside the UPS trailer! They took care of me tho.
