As an 11 year veteran of Con-way Freight (South) as it's called now, I can say that it is a good company to work for. If you have the patience to let yourself be successful. I work @ a small terminal and that is one of the hardest places to get on and one of the hardest places to make a good living when you first start out. If, however, you don't have to "Start At The Top".....and can afford to take the 4 years to top out, the job is hard to beat.

At a larger facility it goes much easier. You can hire in and be running within a few weeks(IF....and it's a big if.....the situation is just right). Otherwise, you work the dock.....and that ain't Truck Drivin'.... But, You get paid for every thing you do. Except when you drive Line Haul.... You have to give them around 20 minutes a night/day for your pre-trips. And they will take 30 min a day for lunch if you run P&D(so....eat a lunch).

One thing that is not right.....If you live in Hopkinsville, KY(and run for Con-way Freight (Central)) you make $1 more an hour and about .05 mi. more than the guy that lives across the state line in Clarksville, TN and runs for Con-way Freight (South) out of Nashville, TN.

The Benefits are excellent. We pay 1% of our gross pay for FAMILY coverage insurance! UNLESS your wife works and has insurance available(then you have to pay (I think) an additional $30 a week). We have Dental and Vision included in that 1%. If you make $1500....you pay $15. $800.......$8. I personally think that's pretty killer.

After 1 year you get 2 weeks paid vacation(45 hours X your hourly rate). Which for me is over $900.00 per vacation week before take outs. After 8 years you get 3 weeks. I think you go to 4 weeks after 12 yrs. But, don't quote me on it.

Then there's the 401-k.....If you put in 5%.....they match 2.5%.....up to 6% where they top out @ 3%......it adds up pretty good.

BUT.......they have rules......LOTS of them. But, with all they give I don't think they are too bad.....Unless you smoke/chew.....If they catch you doin' that ON THE PROPERTY(or in their truck).....first they'll warn you.....Second they'll write you up.......Third...See Ya! (But they also will pay for you to get help quitting!!!)

Finally......for my first post.....no, I'm not a Company man.....As a matter of fact........I'm getting ready to quit!! But, if you want to be home every day......and eventually make the best money you have ever made....and not have to kill yourself doing it......and can wait 5 years to be making it...It's DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT....This is the place to be.........or FedEx....for that matter. As they pretty much run things close to the same.

Just don't make the move thinking you'll make the big bucks in the beginning. YOU WON'T.

    That's it for now.

See ya on the big road soon!!!

I am a Captain on the Tennessee Road Team for 2007, and recently my wife and I made a weekend trip in the Road Team Truck for a truck driving championship in Memphis. It's a 2004 Peterbilt with all the bells and whistles......She made the comment that we could do this kind of thing for a living. She has always loved to travel and always up for a "Road Trip". I told her to start doing some research when we got home and we'd talk about it. Well.......she did. Her job pays around $12 and hour and it is a go nowhere warehouse job.....We got her a CDL book from the THP and she's been studying. We've always wanted to do this kind of thing. Our girls are out of the house......So....We're about to hit the road. I'm gonna be her trainer....(that should be an adventure!!) I've trained other drivers before and we are really looking forward to this.

Good luck to her and to both of you. I trained my wife years ago and then she let her CDL expire and had to go to scholl to get it back. They made jokes about her being able to shift but not use the clutch of course i never taught her to double clutch i like to sleep going down the road so she had a hard time at first with but got the hang of it finally and did good. we are over seas right now working and will be here till the war is over or we can't stand it any more which ever comes first. Then we will see you all out there on the road. So bottom line stay safe and good luck to you.

Hey Steve, Im a recent student graduate of a community college around the memphis area. I have applied for Con-way and even talked to a Mr Jam Johnson about getting on with them but he said they are not hiring for anything at the time but yet they have a posting in the paper past 4 weeks for a Driver Sales Representative position... so are they just hiring for experienced drivers only or do they just like taking applications all the time?? I would just be trilled to start out doing dock work as long as I could just get my feet in the door and then into a driving position with a local company like Con-way and having a 23month old boy at home is the only reason Im trying to hold off going OTR or else it will be 2weeks gone and 2 days home and then do it all over. I just didnt wanna miss out on him growing up unless I have no choice...which seems hard esp now this time of year but I atleast wanted to try. you have any ideas or places arouind memphis,TN i might wanna check out?

Steve and Lo, I worked for conway for 13 years.Mostly local, some linehaul. Not a bad company to work for.Good pay, benefits.I left in 2006.The constant change in management made it hard to know what the next week or day would bring regarding work assignments or a new rule or regulation based on company policy.I saw alot of drivers let go or resign over petty issues.Don't get me wrong, good pay equates to hard work and I did work hard.Rules and regulations,I can live by these, but there came a time when I just wanted to drive,Conway is about profit and shareholders, not about drivers.I think they have lost sight of how profits are made and where they come from, drivers.I went back to where I started,a small company, less money, but appreciated for my record and skills, and I have a name now not just a number.Good Luck.

Had my phone interview with conway truckload(CFI) and have orientation scheduled for Feb 25th. I also spoke to Conway freight and will turn in application next week once I'm done with road test and take my doubles & hazmat test.Talked to TM and he said its a good time but no promises.
