Today I failed my cdl skills test on the air brake pretrip. I had a coupling/trailer pretrip and it went fine I only missed 1 point. But for the applied pressure brake test I said hold the brake for 60 seconds and makes sure the air psi doesn't drop more than 3.But it's supposed to be 4 psi. And that's an "automatic fail" just for being 1 psi off. It's stupid because I'd bet at least half of truck drivers don't even do an applied pressure test or know the correct amount of PSI it can drop.

It sucks not being able to get on the road. the school i go to only gives you 2 tries and now I have to wait 4 days and get nerves again just so some guy with a clipboard can assess me. Tips for passing the skills test?

Dont give up. Memorize your pretrip/break test like it is a script. Just keep reciting it.

When I was in school and would be driving behind a semi. Id follow and pretrip it and then pass on the side then the front.

    Just keep practicing. Good luck.

The school I went to gave us a script for the 4 pt. brake check that we had to recite word for word. We had to write it all out multiple times every night for homework. Writing it out a bunch of times over the weekend might help your memory.

In addition to what everyone else said about studying and repetition, get that negative crap out of your head. If you don’t even have your CDL yet then why are you making assumptions about what experienced drivers may or may not do? Even if you’re right, does it matter? Nope

Only one thing matters right now, and that’s passing your exam. Focus on that, and nothing else. That “guy with a clipboard” isn’t going to pass or fail you based on your personality and charm. He’s gonna pass or fail you based on your knowledge of the the state testing requirements that he’s required to follow. You didn’t have the required knowledge, so you failed. Study some more, pass your exam, and get truckin’!

You can do it! Memorize the brake test word for word. It's 6 steps, and just a few magic words. It is 3 psi, if it's just the trractor. But with the trailer attached it's 4. So, you were technically half right. My school gave me a worksheet of the pre-trip to memorize. I got it right enough to pass and I'm female, so I know you'll get it. You can do it!! Just breathe, be ZEN and don't get too nervous. Just pretend you're teaching a new guy.

It's no big deal really. Like failing a test in high school, you'll be fine.
