I just finished truck driving school on the 22nd and took my CDL-A road test yesterday in the school's truck. I aced the first two portions of the test (mentioned every single item on the pre-trip inspection, backed up into all three lanes perfectly dead-center with no pull-ups). But halfway into the driving portion (the last portion) of the test I had to make a right turn at an intersection. I waited until all the streets were clear and no cars were coming by on either side, then I started my right turn. I turned as wide as possible and everything looked good, but in the middle of the turn a red car comes speeding over the hill from the right (which wasn't there when I started my right turn), and the DMV tester told me to "stop".

I stop, and then that red car stops. I complete the turn and we make the drive all the way back to the starting area. Although I did perfectly on everything up until that red car showed up, he tells me I've failed the test because of that one single turn, and goes on to say "whenever the tester has to order the driver to stop or a vehicle has to stop or take evasive action blah blah blah then the test is considered failed."

There were no accidents at all, and I knew I could've made that turn if that stupid hill wasn't in the way and that red car wasn't speeding. But my truck driving school says that they can't lend me the truck for a second chance at the road test, because the new students need to use it and there aren't any free days for non-current-students to operate the truck.

I was wondering: should I call some trucking companies and see if I could get any of them to lend me a truck to drive for my second road test? What do you guys recommend doing?

I'm in Minot, North Dakota (right smack in the middle of the oil boom here) living in my car in -2 degree weather, so I'd like to get my CDL-A license and get a job as soon as possible.

I only have my CDL-A permit, my car, and a -40 degree sleeping bag.

i dont think youll get a company to lend you a truck...perhaps a SMALL company thats lenient on their hiring...but dont know of any around there. your best bet would be to rent a truck, but from what you describe i gather that would be a hardship. your school really ripped you (or the government if you got assistance with the tuition) off. id rank it as one of the worst schools ive ever heard of.

I'd be going to the examiners supervisor on that if it happened as you say.

    Something doesn't sound right.

Not sure where the other car was coming from but if you were making a right turn in the proper lane and into the proper lane the red car should have never been an issue, but if the examiner told you to stop the test does indeed end right there. If the examiner even determines that another vehicle has to take ANY action to avoid you, the test is a fail. Not sure about why the school doesn't allow retests.. depending on the reason you have to wait 24 hours or a full week (or two?) I cannot really remember..

You might see if there is a community college somewhere there that teaches a Class A progam. Those instructors at the school are probably 3rd party examiners and could test you at their school. They probably would charge you, but... You could also check with the DMV and see if they could refer you to a third party examiner who would have a truck you could use. Again, there would probably be a fee but you could do the test again.

If, by chance, you don't pass again, see what you can do with the community college. Sometimes there are funds available to help.

Another thought is that there are companies that offer training but BE CAREFUL. Don't go to CRST, whatever you do. Someone, in another thread, said Millis was a good company with company training. At the level you're at, you would probably do well.

Regarding your school, I'd list it here so word is out about the place. Shameful way to do business...and they took advantage of one of many of us who could least afford that kind of problem at this time.

    Good luck next time.

PS: Just had the same issue today, myself, in my CDL road class (at a community college). Those cars out there are pesky critters.

So you make a right turn and a car comes over a hill and you fail because the examiner said stop? seems rather fishy to me. Seems to be yet another case of an idiot tester that has no right to be road testing truck drivers.

I agree if this was the case. If you completely cleared yourself to both sides and no vehicles were present when you proceeded forward, then, the speeding car needed to make an adjustment (As it came after the fact)

Find the tester / examiners supervisor and frame the conversation as you've done here. No guarantees, but you'll never have a chance if you don't.

    Good luck.

Talking to the examiner's supervisor would be pointless as the examiner's supervisor was no on the skills test and in not in the truck.

The problem here is with the schools policy (or not) of not retesting... now if its two weeks or something before this student can even take the test ( depends on the infraction) then this may be just something that isnt't that clear
