    So, a net gain of 73,000. How many of those will be around 6-12 months from now? That's 873, 000 vacant spots, and how many will be retiring over the next 5-10 years. Most trucks I look at and most posters here are 50+ If the this place was flooded with 19-20 year olds, i'd say some of you have a point, but every truck I look into is an older gentleman RARELY do I see a youngster in the seat. So how big of a gap will there be when the boomers retire? I think it's going to be uglier than some of you think.

    We can only hope. Imagine if they had to pay us the same as they did decades ago (compared to inflation).

    first off 19 and 20 years old can not be hired OTR.

    Same thing was being said 20 years ago, 10 years ago 5 years, and has never happened, about older drivers retiring and nobody to replace them, yet they have been replaced, every year.

    § 391.11: General qualifications of drivers.

    (a) A person shall not drive a commercial motor vehicle unless he/she is qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle. Except as provided in § 391.63, a motor carrier shall not require or permit a person to drive a commercial motor vehicle unless that person is qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle.
    (b) Except as provided in subpart G of this part, a person is qualified to drive a motor vehicle if he/she—
    (1) Is at least 21 years old;

    companies do not raise wages when they get 100's of applications per job opening. Supply and demand, they can always find another person to do the job for the present wages.

    Being 21 to drive has less to do with interest than you are implying. Age restrictions do not stop 14-15 year olds all over tuner car websites even though they can't legally drive one yet. They are interested nonetheless and still talk about it and learn all they can. Face it, young kids don't have any interest in driving trucks.

    are they though? not really, they are still less than they were 10 years ago, there is NO driver shortage, no matter how much you want there to be one...

    The ATA promotes that there is a shortage to keep uninformed people thinking they can get a job that pays UP TO $65,000 a year....

    Look into who the ATA represents, and who is the president of ATA.

    Made 15.00 an hour in 1979 working as a laborer on a cement crew (age 17). I call to check on a local driving job and am offered 14.00 an hr and .31 per mile local, lmao.
    When they say there is a shortage of drivers, I think its because only about 1 out of 10 drivers (applicants) will accept the crappy treatment and wages!
    Like one driver above noted, the driver stands between the carrier/broker and the Dot. We get it both sides! Take some time and look up the statements made by state legislatures upon passing down some of these ****** up laws, most are aimed at the carriers but yet it is the driver appearing in court and in most cases its the driver paying the fine and dealing with having it on his/her record.
    They have created an unfavorable environment for human beings of average intelligence!
    This is why in the future, more laws will be imposed, more electronic babysitting gadgets will be installed and then overtime justified by the resulting low grade of human beings willing to deal with all the crap!

    If you dont agree, go shop at Wallmart, then go to a nice highend store with well paid employees and compare experiences,lol.
