I do believe there is a rule of only 1 passenger, and an accompanying permission letter from Carrier.

I have never heard of nor seen that rule. heck I-40 is covered up with trucks with entire families apparently living out of them, Other trucks with drivers from certain countries will have 5 men to a truck, why I am not sure, but do know for a fact the DOT is 100% aware of it. I have seen them shut the trucks down and call a hazmat team out to deal with just cleaning them up.
Unless it has changed, the driver does not have to have the letter of permission in the truck, the letter is supposed to be kept at the company office, in cases that pertains to one, not all does.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I guess I’ve been mistaken all these years. Looked it up again. Company I used to work for. their policy was only 1 rider allowed, I misunderstood that to be DOT reg.

They gave us a blank letter as I remember.I keep one in my Truck now, just in case. But, I’ve never been asked for one, only if I have any passengers with Me. Have seen many a whole family. We used to take our daughter.I always thought there was a 1 only rule. I was Wrong, worried about nothing. That’s funny.

I remember a few years back some Mexican was rolling around with 5 or 6 family members, in flagrant violation of his company's policy. He lost track of one of his spawn and ran her over at a truck stop. Not enough to kill her but enough to make her wish he had...guts squished out down below and what not. So of course the family sues Papa's company and win millions. So yes not only is it legal it can also be very lucrative.

What I don't understand is why is it such a big deal to be seatbelted in a big truck, but hop on a two wheeled motorcycle thats 10 times more dangerous and its totally fine.

This is one of the most dangerous professions, jobs ... hobby and I don't get why people would stick their kids in a truck and put them in danger like that.
Here is another reason why ...
Anybody witness the fiery crash in Denver involving a trucker?4wayflashers and bzinger Thank this. -
You will need to ask the company that you drive for. Tho most family hauling trucks I would not be surprised to find they are owner operators.
