You don't have to 'pay your dues' as conventional wisdom would have it. If you're not strapped for cash and have time to look around, then find a small O/O with a few trucks who is willing to pay you a percentage of what the truck earns. You'll find that you'll be facing much less hassle and pressure than you would be with one of the 'bottom feeder' big companies.

Newguy74, I'm supposed to graduate with my Class A CDL on Thursday 12/06/2012. I took all the tests I could when I got my learner's permit. I passed them all and thought, hell yeah this is gonna make me more employable. I'm not so sure that is the truth. I am probably gonna sign on with McElroy Truck Lines out of Alabama. Start at 40cpm, home weekends, $400 a week training pay, etc. If u don't wanna be out on the road for weeks at a time and can't find anything local, my best suggestion would be a flatbed company. Just my 2 cents, hope that might help a little bit. Good luck to ya :)

I too am looking at McElory........ it would be better then working as a juvenile corrections officer making 8 bucks an hour! I am only 25 and have a lot of financial debt and am looking at becoming a police officer.......I have my degree in criminal justice but the problem is.......having credit issues hurts your chances of becoming a police officer. So the next thing I wanted to do was be a truck driver.....my dad has drove all his life. He likes it for the most part. I love to drive and wouldn't mind getting paid to drive, and a positive thing about flatbed work is it's physical work and I hate sitting around ALL the time doing nothing. Granted I know driving a truck is pretty much sitting all the time, but you can still get some physical activity when you have to load and unload.
