Hello Everyone my name is Coolbreeze and I'm new to the Forum...this is my problem...I'm an O/O and I have a 2001 Volvo Day Cab with a Detroit 60 series engine....im having problems with my a/c....I bought a new/reman fan clutch from Volvo in the winter...and I bought a new compressor and dryer at the beginning of spring...anyway...got the system vaccum and charged...I watch them put 3.09lbs in it(that's what my firewall says to put in it)...my problem is...when I sit Idle...the compressor cycle fast and the motor fan clutch is idling...I know it suppose to be on but its not...I was told to buy a High Pressure Switch and I did...it didn't do nothing! the catch is...as long as im rolling the a/c will run you out the truck...cant go past 2....but as soon as I sit about 2-5 minutes the compressor goes back to cycling fast!...people have told me to run a hot wire to the clutch to bypass the computer...they told me to run a toggle switch to the fan and switch it when im idle to stay on...even buy an electric fan to put in front of the condenser...I need some serious advice and help! I forgot to say...every once in a while when im sitting...the fan runs and my a/c is cold...so I know its not a fuse!
please help..its getting hot!
fan dont come on when a/c is on!

Have you double checked the pressure when its running?
-
me personally no....but....the shop I let do the work...they had the A/C machine hooked up to it...and as I watched the high side rise and they was saying your fan should kick on right about now...but it never did....they even raised the rpm to i'm guessing about 17-19 rpms to make the fan come on...but it never did...but my truck don't run hot...the fan kicks on and off when im rolling...I hear it...im just confused about the whole issue!..but one thing I did notice...the didn't put any oil in the compressor...the said they only vaccum Freon not the oil....its weired because the fire wall says..3.09 Freon and 10.0 oil!
-
What they said about the oil is correct, Is you're eng fan working normally is the air getting to it for it to come on, without it the Ac is going to keep cycling on the high Hd pressure Switch.
-
they so call say that the compressure comes with oil so no need to add....and everytime I turn the key I hear a psss from the fan clutch so i'm assuming im getting air to the fan....is their a way to check the fan clutch to see if its a defect or some sort?

You need some serious electrical diagnostics on that truck for the ac u can see and try to replace the ac module if not done so already most of the time they go bad and have all kinds of weird issues if that does not take care of the issue then u need to check the wiring connections or the module and make sure it has a good ground the easiest thing you can do is look at the white on the module connection that is the ground wire jump that to a known good ground and see what happens if These two things don't help then you want to check the thermostat or freeze switch in the cab whichever it has its in the evaporator so u have to remove blower motor to get to it and of that is not the issue that what I want to do is take it to a shop that's good with volvo ac because u got a serious electrical issue and without proper diagnostic chart and schematics you won't be able to figure it out I hope some of this helped let me know if you need anything else

Does the ac work at a fast idle?
I have a truck that does the same thing and you have to get the idle up if you are sitting in order for the ac to work -
Dont you have the A/C diagnostic unit on the firewall left if the steering shaft. That usually tells you what is wrong. It has the best system for troubleshooting there is. I think my 99 day cab volvo had a crazy amount of freon needed like 6 lbs. Under that you need to run the compressor faster to get it to cool. You should get them to pump some more freon into the system to see if it fixes it. This is NOT a car A/C system, dont let them think they know how much t needs. Drop another pound in there and see if it helps.

*this would be perfectly good advice if it wasn't for the act tht putting to much freon in an r134a blows up you're compressor seal so I most definately would not suggest it they put the spec on the firewall for a reason stick by it or you might end up damaging more than fixing -
Good luck with the by the book approach. I guess you will just never find out.
